Hi! I'm new to your channel! Loved watching a few of your videos and happily subscribed! My husband and I have been minimalists for about 2 years now and we have a 3 year old daughter. It's SO refreshing to see a "minimalism with kids" video that shows the piles of stuffed animals, the dozens of Legos and lots of books; all while still being organized and in a simple bedroom. Love it!

🛏 love making the bed first thing in the morning. I read somewhere once that it’s a ‘snowball’ activity for productivity, as in, when you do something small like make the bed, it makes you feel motivated to tackle something else, then something else etc. Can’t say that works every morning 😅 but a made up bed sure is a nice way to start the day!

I totally agree, it’s amazing how much something like making the bed or changing out of your pajamas can get the ball rolling on your day! 🏀💨

Just a thought, for what it’s worth: have a designated flat bedsheet that your kids can lay out on the floor and build their legos on-once it’s time to clean up, they can just scoop up the bedsheet and place it inside the container where they store the legos. Might not work for them, just thought i’d share. 😊

I think we would be great friends if we lived in the same country! We moved over with every piece clothing our children owned in their carryon suitcases. My son only wears blue shorts and t-shirts, so it's possible that he has even less clothes than your kids! Well, he does have school uniforms, but even then only 3 sets. We do have slightly more legos and stuffies, but very similar! Since we're not in the UK permanently, I tend to look at everything coming into the house with an eye of how easy it is to pack and move! Also, couch/bed tip. I keep a broom handle underneath the couch so I can easily get out stuff that gets under there. For us its usually only dog toys though. :)
@AtoZenLife
@AtoZenLife 3 жыл бұрын
Ahahahaha, that is so awesome! How old is your son? That’s pretty impressive for a kid! It’s funny you should say that about the broom - in my blog post when I did the KonMari method ages ago I talked about using a Swiffer handle! This couch has a much bigger gap, so it’s much easier to get underneath, but for low couches that is a great tip. 👌

I love the calm atmosphere in your kids bedroom! Love that you used the extra kitchen cabinets! My daughter has only shelves in her closet. We use Ikea drawer dividers (skubb series) for her clothes. That way I can fold Konmarie style and she can easily find what she needs. And very importantly, when it gets messed up, I don't mind because at least the clothing items are contained in it's own box and don't get stuffed into the back of the closet.

🛏️ Making the bed is a huge must for me. It's part of my daily morning routine, wake up, make my bed and then make my coffee. Making my bed just sets me up for the day before I proceed with my other daily chores. It also makes me happy looking at my bed all made up.

I actually change seasons in my kids‘ drawer: not because they have a lot of clothes but because I always have to argue why they are not allowed to wear shorts in winter :) I started minimalism before having kids and as I am still working on my clutter we never had that many toys. Nevertheless I will be VERY happy when we can let go of our toddler toys. My son (5) is interested in Legos most and just a few other things and in general really distressed by the amount of toys around him, but my daughter (3.5) is still too young for Legos and so we wait now until they are on the same stage to pass on the toddler things she clearly wants to keep…

My mother used to count to 10 and during that time I better clean up my toys, etc. She said at 10, she would throw away anything left on the floor. Sometimes I would hear her say 8 and a half, if i was not moving fast enough and she didn't want me to not have enough time I guess. Anyway, she would slow it up or down as I was racing to pick up my toys. I also did that with my kids. Works every time! I believe it is their responsibility to clean up their mess. Of course, I helped them when they were very young and was learning how to clean up.

How do you deal with the disappointment, sadness and anger of your kids when you declutter their stuff? For me this is the hardest part. I have started my minimalism journey four to five years ago and think I am pretty good now. But still it is hard to declutter toys and little things the kids have. My boys are 3 and 4 and they have clear favourite toys, and don`t notice that easily if something is missing. But my 7yr old daughter notices every little thing, and gets very mad and accuses me if something is gone. Even something you would think is just trash. The kids also get a lot of plastic clutter from their dad (who does not live with us), which I feel I cannot through away, even though I would never bring that stuff to my home by choice.

@@AtoZenLife I do, but it would work in your sink since your one is the size of my two, I just wash and rinse in the first half and dry in the second. I do have a dishwasher so I put all the small items in the washer and do the large last so they’re not splashed on. I’ve also seen some that hang above the sink, like at eye level, so they don’t get soapy while washing. Those may work too if you don’t mind figuring a way to hang them in your open space.

For my taste it's too white. I would probably add a frame or two on the walls because now it seems so empty and a bit sterile. But the fact that all the clothes fit in that one piece of furniture is damn impressive! And not just 'all the clothes for the season' but literally ALL the clothes! I am super impressed by that!

Thanks Kallisto! I have two little animal pics I want to frame above the dresser, and I have a craft in mind to put to put alongside it - it’s tough with 12 ft ceilings! I wouldn’t put it past us to have a bigger bookshelf in the future, or maybe desks for the boys to work at when they are older so we shall see. 🤗

I have been working on my sons room … I am minimal with my whole house but he has so many things that were given to him as gifts and such but he never plays with I swear by minimalism because it makes my life so much easier I am able to spend more time with family and even me time. I usually do a cleanup at the end of the night to just put stuff back from everyday living . I just did a big declutter in my sons room so over the next few months I will be watching what he plays with and what he doesn’t. My one question is my son likes legos too but it is becoming a lot of pieces do you just have that one container for legos?

How do you keep your kids from wearing shorts in the winter and winter cloths in the summer if all 4 seasons are in the cabinets? And another question- what do you do with toys that the older one has outgrown and still don't fit the smaller kid? Great video!!

When Your kids are very good behaviour all the time and always taking good care of their things, keeping their rooms very clean, loving their favorite things and want to make nice childhood collections of their things: books, clothes, toys, video games, clothes, DVDs and etc, then donataing is very wrong thing to do. If You have few space then storage boxes and shelves will help You out and Your kids will be very happy and thankful then, if they can keep their favourite things. Childhood things are very valuable and it is very sad, if they won’t see them anymore in their life. Every child should have the right to keep their things, if they can take good care of them all the time!!!

How did you get your kids on board with minimalism? I try my best, we live in a tiny home in London and we don't have much, but kids toys are hard, and my 7yo loves to keep EVERYTHING
@katielarsen2630

My 7 year old is like that and another comment mentioned a 7yo, I think it's a developmental thing where there is a fear of change. I would try to focus on one specific type of collection so they can fulfill that hoarder instinct without having way too much. Sometimes I just let mine keep the empty box or other odd item that she won't let go of. This phase won't last forever

Baskets in the drawers would allow you to fold vertically.

That’s definitely something that we thought about and might explore in the future! The hardware sticks out quite far where the door attaches so that’s one small problem that we would need to think about - cheers!

The kitchen cabinet dresser is beautiful and works so well in you boys room. What if you added wood runners on the inside to bring out the attachment point for draws that could pull out. You might loss 3+” a side but the functionality of pull out drawers might be worth it... sorry bad explanation and it seems you make it work well as it is 👍🏼 just a thought
