While I never saw the Blackbird take off I was able to view one on the flightline before it was decommissioned in 1989. The maintenance supervisor said it's just too expensive to continue. Specifically the fuel consumption of the Blackbird was outrageous. It leaked fuel before take off and had to be refueled in flight before the afterburners could be lit. The Blackbird's skin was porous and could only be sealed at post supersonic speed. I was told that the AF opted for the U-2 and conventional S for reconnaissance. That's why I'm stunned that Congress and DOD approved a SR-72 program. Unless Lockheed solved the problems with the Blackbird. I need to give Lockheed Sunkworks its flowers 💐 because despite its issues the SR-71 was an amazing 👏 aircraft.

My late father was the first man to command both the U-2 wing and then the SR-71 wing. He, and the few who followed, got their stars. In my father’s case nearly 60 years ago. Like the SR-71 time flies.

Back in the 80s I lived on a little ranch in Southern California on top of a little mountain about 8 miles from March AFB I got to see the SR71 Several times land and take off it was like no other plane when it was landing it looked like it was Floating and when it took off it was all Business a few seconds later a Sonic boom would take place.

He never flew any jets in the movie. He only flew his own P-51 Mustang in the movie. There were and are absolutely zero F-14 tomcats in condition to fly.

So Is it not possible to Implement a cooling system at the front to somewhat at least help along with the impressive material ? They do it in rocket nozzels why not this plane ? Implement that, , minimal radar cross section, This plane could not only be used for recons but deliver various warheads as well 😮 😇
