It is like saying why can't I try drugs and alcohol to know by experience the truth of these things! Well of course one can. Each one is free to do what they like and learn through hard experience and grow through fall. The only thing is that this method of learning everything by one's own experiences is not only a long and dangerous one but is also somewhat like reversing a long evolutionary process through which we have collectively evolved. Still it is up to each one to decide for themselves whether to gain from the wisdom of those who have dwelt upon these subjects or else to learn all by themselves.

Alokji, as someone who is still very new to the integral yoga, i had a question regarding the role of the ishta devata, which i would be very grateful if you could answer. As far as my understanding goes, according to sri aurobindo and the mother, the gods we most commonly think of as our ishta devatas (like shiva, krishna, ganesha, kali and etc) are in their ultimate condiousness, various personalities of the divine. Sri aurobindo mentions it multiple times that all the gods have the full divine behind them. But at the same time, the mother especially speaks often of going beyond the gods, and I do not have clarity on what that would entail, if the gods are personalities of the supreme, does that not mean they ARE the supreme, just wearing a particular name or form? Or is what is simply meant is to go beyond the Overmind manifestations of the gods, where their consiousness takes on certain limitations and divisions, and their consiousness is not in its ultimate state? On a more practical level, i know the base of the yoga is surrendering and opening to the mother, but is there any problem if we try to surrender and open to our ishta devatas instead (and since the divine is one, that should be equivalent to opening to the mother right?) ? In my case, surrendering and devotion to lord shiva comes to me a bit more naturally, and if he is a personality and form of the divine, he should also be capable of leading a person to realms beyond the overmind, right? I thank you for your time, and please excuse my ignorance🙇‍♂️

Dear Mahiman, As you rightly surmised each god comes into existence through a conscious self limitation of the Supreme Divine. The Name and Form serve a certain function and purpose. Generally the gods being fully conscious do not interfere with the function of other gods as it may create an imbalance in creation. Thus if one seeks Moksha and Vairagya then Shiva is the power who destroys all illusion born of Ignorance. Going beyond the gods is nothing new to Sanatan Dharma. This does not mean that it belittles the gods and their function in anyway. It simply means that one seeks to connect directly with the Supreme. Here however the goal is transformation of earth nature something that has never been done before. The power and the mandate for accomplishing this is with the Mother. Gods can help in their own way towards this but cannot accomplish this. Surrender, naturally has to be towards one. Because it implies handing over oneself into the hands of the one to whom we surrender. It opens us to the influence of the power embodied by the one at whose feet we surrender. Naturally it has to be spontaneous and not under any outer compulsion. Generally someone close to an Ishta devata comes to the Mother it happens because it is the Ishta devata who knowing the true soul need or inner aspiration impels us towards the Mother. Evolution is the process through which the Divine hidden within the core of creation manifests Himself step by step. Towards this end there is a long preparation through millenium followed by a sudden leap through a crisis of events and circumstances over a couple of centuries or so. Sri Aurobindo and the Mother called these moments of accelerated evolution as 'The Hour of God' when the old based are shaken, (the Gita calls it as dharmasyaglani) and the Divine comes as the Avatar to reset the lost balance and take creation one step higher through the doors of the crisis. We are indeed passing through such an hour as the Mother revealed. 'We are at one of these "Hours of God", when the old bases get shaken, and there is a great confusion; but it is a wonderful opportunity for those who want to leap forward, the possibility of progress is exceptional.'

इश्वर क्यों स्वयं भू है ? इश्वर कहां से आया । उसकी शक्ति कहां से आई ? वह सृष्टि क्यों बनाया जिसमें केवल दुःख है !!! ये प्रश्न का उत्तर अभी तक मुझे नहीं मिल पाया । हां उपनिषद और दर्शन और वेद के कुछ शुक्त कुछ रहस्यमई ढ़ंग से वह बताते जरूर हैं।

The Divine is called as swayambhu (Self born) because He or She is the Origin of all origins. It is a way of saying that He is a self existent Reality. There is no why to it except that for the purpose of the manifestation He makes himself somewhat tangible even though in the last analysis Unknowable. Why manifestation? Well because the Delight of the Divine, the Consciousness of the Divine, the infinity of the Divine seeks to express Itself as a poet expresses what is within him. Manifestation is impelled by Delight. Pain and pleasure are means to prepare us for receiving and expressing the delight. They are stages of preparation just as a mountaineer impelled with the possibility of joy on climbing the high peaks, must prepare himself through hard training or as a child must train and discipline himself to bring out his deeper possibilities so too creation undergoes suffering as a kind of labour pain to deliver the godlike or divine possibility within us.
