Sometimes I wonder, Sreetips, if you just do this gig in order to show off your awesome laboratory glass collection! 😂 Seriously though… when you pulled up that 10 liter beaker I literally said “Holy crap!” right out loud! It looks like you used *WAY* less SMB for this precipitation than you would have by adding it straight to the gold solution. Plus now you don’t have to wash off the excess chemicals! I’d be tempted to do the SO2 gas precipitations more often. Also, were you able to use less nitric acid than expected just by starting out with a larger than normal amount of hydrochloric? That sounds like something that would be worth exploring further. Hope you have a good night, Chief. See you for part 3!

You are a true Master! That was incredible, Gunny! I started pouring off my solution, when using Silver to enquart, into several 3,000 ml beakers and adding HCL. The Silver cloriode forms and I go from there, recovering the Silver cloriode, converting it with NaOh and sugar, before running it through the Silver Cell. I noticed something interesting in my current boil I just started. The first few times, the pour off was mostly Copper Nitrate. Only after the third boil did I start to get Silver cloriode to start forming. Interesting. It's a larger amount than I normally do, so I suppose that there would be Copper in the mix. Or, quite possibly, I got into some Silver plate. Either way. I save the Copper as well and it doesn't seem to effect the process adversely. I know that Copper isn't a PM. It does have value though and the price for clean Copper is climbing. Like I said, I'm Scotch.

I did not or could not see any red fumes being generated in the beginning of the SO2 precip to confirm. Thanks again, amazing videos can't wait till next one!
@sreetipsАй бұрын
I used incremental nitric dosing; adding just the right amount of nitric to just dissolve the gold. If done correctly there’s no need to drive off excess nitric because there won’t be any to drive off.

@scorpionfpv6412Ай бұрын
I do wonder if the depth of the delivery tube and the volume above have more of an impact than how dilute it is, It would be good to have some different sized beaker/tube with samples of the same solution (same volume of liquid) and then a T off from the gas generator so we have 2 delivery tubes you could then see which solution turns quicker (a race where precipitation counts) the theory being the gas has more time to dissolve

@deanfranklin6870Ай бұрын
Have you considered making a cooling system for modifying the temperature during reactions? A small container with very cold salt water that is pumped into a coil inside of the beakers? If you're interested I'd be happy to explain that more in depth. Thanks for showing the series. Outstanding as always

I wonder if they make glass fish tank bubblers, i imagine this would work faster with a bunch of smaller bubbles. Same amount of gas but with much more surface area
@sreetipsАй бұрын
The delivery tube must be at least 1.4 inch (6.35mm) or else the gold will form and clog it up.
@CothranMikeАй бұрын
@@sreetips yes, too small and the orifice will get clotted gold at these pressures (just above ambient pressure 1.01). If using gas flow at higher pressures like 1.5 bar be prepared for more splash and movement of the delivery tube but if used with a manifold feeding three or more tubes or orifices this will be less of a problem. Great beakers, it's alive!

Neat precip. What gets left behind in the solution when you precip with SO2? Is "Sulfur Chlori(d/t)e" a thing?
@sreetipsАй бұрын
Nothing that I know of. That’s why the gas precipitation is so clean. When we dump the SMB straight in then there’s a bunch of salt. But there’s nothing but clean gold left after the gas precip.

Bearing in mind the cost of the scrap gold, acids, gasses and electricity. But excluding the equipment costs. What is your profit margin and where do do you sell your refined gold?
@sreetipsАй бұрын
We gain profit when we buy. I’ve never calculated it from a specific batch because it’s highly variable. For example, my wife traded four hundred bucks for about three thousand in gold the other day. Last Friday, I went to a sale with her and we bought (traded paper dollars for) $2800 worth of scrap gold. We picked every piece of karat gold all bagged in small baggies with a price marked on them. When we tallied it up came to $1900. Then my wife asked the seller if they could do any better (in my mind I’m saying no, don’t, this is an excellent bargain). To my astonishment they knocked $300 off so our total trade was for $1600 worth of paper dollars given to them for $2800 worth of highly valuable gold. We traded paper, that’s declining, for gold, that’s rising. People are clueless about the value and importance of owning GOLD. They think, incorrectly, that paper dollars are more valuable than gold!

The SmB gas is it combined inside the liquid? Or does it create an Ozone above the liquid and eventually the PPM in the air cause the desired reaction?

The gas reacts with the liquid and precipitates the pure gold.

The gas produced is sulfur dioxide, which is a reducing agent. It reduces the gold ions down to elemental gold.

How do you decide between boiling sponge in HCl or Nitric? Does one dissolve specific metals out of solution better then the other?
@sreetipsАй бұрын
I use nitric during the recovery to remove silver and base metals. I use hydrochloric to boil the pure gold after it’s been precipitated during the refining phase to remove dissolved metals from the gold powder. Recovery and refining are two totally different processes. HCl does a much better job of removing dissolved metals than plain water does.

difference between precipitating directly with SO2 gas and precipitating with Sodium MetaBiSufite? does the process with sodium metaBiSulfite actually create SO2 gas almost instantaneously that then drops the gold?
