I made the suggestion last time you did this to roll out your anodes into a thin ribbon which you can just feed in as they're consumed (being thin enough to form around the edge of the beaker for support) clip your power cable direct to the anode. No faffing with connection pieces.
@dunravin5 ай бұрын
Alternatively roll out your anodes then roll one end up into a lump leaving enough to hook over the beaker and connect to PSU.

your power supply is 15V 40A, set the voltage to full 15V but limit the current to about 10A, too much current may boil the electrolyt, so keep an eye on it and reduce the current (left button) if too hot. don't care at the voltage itself. An interesting experiment would be to do the same thing with low-rate gold, 10 carat for example (and a copper wire, not a gold one), to see how much gold remains at the bottom of the beaker at the end.
@sreetips5 ай бұрын
The book calls for 1.5 volts, amps fall where they may. Electrolytic refining requires fairly high purity gold anode to begin with (the book says 980 parts per thousand or better). Otherwise the cell would quickly become fouled with base metals and silver.

Adding comment before I finish the video here... I see no heat insulation below the graphite box. I predict this will not go well since the fire brick lets the air under the box. One torch is not enough to heat the graphite box since graphite rejects heat so well. I hope this works but my prediction might well come to pass. Edit after the vid. Glad you figured out from the the chill lines this needed more heat! Good job!

Very interesting! But I wonder, why you haven´t cleaned the gold hanger in hydrochloric acid before attaching it to the gold plate after hammering it with a steel hammer. By hmmering it in hot state you for sure transfered Fe atoms to the gold , which is perhaps the reason of its discoloration.

What are the potential +/- To this Experiment? Would you be able to do 10k and 14k gold or would you have to Nitrate strip the silver out first?
@sreetips5 ай бұрын
In order for electrolytic refining to be successful the anode material must be relatively high purity to begin with. Can’t use 10k or 14k or ever 18k because the electrolyte would quickly become saturated with contaminants.

@sreetips5 ай бұрын
I don’t think it’s called Aqua Regia. Just HCl and peroxide. Chlorine gas will also dissolve GOLD.
@ottolehikoinen61935 ай бұрын
Dripping strong Hydrogen Peroxide in HCl generates dissolved chlorine radicals (and chlorine gas) that react with gold. The reaction could be way faster if the nearly pure gold powder was stirred but at least me would not want to be near a potential runaway reaction involving chlorine gas. When aqua regia was invented no source of pure enough peroxide was known (production invented 19th century)
