(19 Aug 1994) Sri Lanka swore in a new Prime minister on Friday (19/8), ending
17 years of controversial rule by the United National Party.
Chandrika Kumaranatunga, 49 is the country's 14th leader. Her
father and mother have also held the post.

Ranil Wimal, How can you say she did nothing. She did whatever she could during the height of a gruesome war. We got new roads, hospitals, Dematagoda overhead bridge, and all other bridges, the underground tunnel at Borella, and most of all turned this country known as a murderous country after the July riots to a new peace-loving country. All this she did during the height of LTTE problems. She even lost her eye! It was during her time that the best of equipment for the war was bought to crush the LTTE. She re-introduced English, the internet, the prices of computers etc. were brought down. In this picture, she looks absolutely beautiful especially with that infectious smile of hers. We loved her when she ruled this country. For us, it was the best time!

වලව්ව සිංහල වචනයක් නොව දෙමළ වචනයකි. එහි අර්ථය මැද මිදුල් සහිත විශාල ගෙයක්. වලව්වල මේ දක්වා දෙමළ ජාතිකයන් මිස කිසිදු සිංහලයෙක් ජීවත්වී නැත. ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ වලව් ආරම්භ වූයේ උඩරට දෙමළ රජුන්ගේ ආක්‍රමණයත් සමඟයි. රජුන්ගේ දෙමළ නෑදෑ හිතවතුන් විශාල භූමි අත්කර දෙමින් වලව් සාදා ගැනීමට උදවි විය. ඒ අතර දෙමළ රජවරුන් විසින් සිංහල රදලයන් සමූල ඝාතනය කරන ලදී. ඒ වෙනුවට ද්‍රවිඩ රදල පැලන්තියක් වලව් සමඟ බිහිවිය. සිංහලයන් දිවි බේරා ගැනීමට කඳුකර භූමි වලට ගොස් පදිංචි වී බොහෝ දුක් කම්කටොලු විඳිමින් අද දක්වා ජීවත්වේ. ඔවුන්ගේ විශාල සාරවත් ඉඩකඩම් දෙමලුන්ගේ ග්‍රහණයට ලක්ව සියල්ල ඔවුන් විසින් මේ දක්වා භුක්ති විඳ ඇති බව ඉතිහාසය අධ්‍යනය කරන විට පහසුවෙන් වැටහේ. ද්‍රවිඩ වලව් පරම්පරාද 1800 ගණන් වන විට ක්‍රමයෙන් ක්ෂයවී ගොස් ඒ වෙනුවට ඉංග්‍රීසින්ගේ වහලුන් ලෙස පැමිණි කුල හීන මිනිසුන්ගෙන් සෑදුණු දෙමළ ජාතිකයන් විසින් සාදාගත් වලව් 1820ගණන් සිට පැවත එන බැව් මනාව වැටහේ. දැන් ඔවුන් සිංහල නමින් සිංහල භාෂාව කථාකරන සිංහල ඇදුම් අදින සිංහල ජාතිකයන් ලෙස ජීවත්වේ. ඒනිසා ඔවුන් කිසිවෙක් සිංහලයන්ගෙන් වෙන්කර හදුනා ගැනීමට නොහැකි නමුත් සිංහල ජාතිකයන්ට ඉතා කෘෘර ලෙස පීඩාකරමින් ජීවත්වේ. සිංහලයන්ගෙන් බලහත් කාරකරමින් හා මරා දමමින් ඔවුන්ගේ ඉඩකඩම් හා වස්තුව කොල්ලකා ඇත්තේ සිංහලයන් ඔවුන්ගේ ජාතියේ අය නොවන (තමන් ද්‍ර විඩයන් නිසයි). සිංහලයන් කිසි විටක එම ද්‍රවිඩ ජාතිකයන්ට හෝ අනෙකුත් සිංහලයන්ට කිසිදු පීඩාවක් මේ දක්වා කර නොමැති බැව් සමාජ ගවේශණයෙන් මනාව වැටහේ. සිංහල රජ පරම්පරාවල අය පවා රටේ ඉන්දැද්දි ඔවුන් අඩු කුලේ අය කියල නටන වලව් කෝළම් නාඩගම මොකක්ද කියල මටනම් තේරෙන්නෙෑ.
