The Sri Lanka Spurfowl, scientifically known as Galloperdix bicalcarata, is a species of bird endemic to Sri Lanka. It belongs to the Phasianidae family, which includes pheasants, partridges, and quails. This species is primarily found in the dense undergrowth of forests, particularly in the wet zone of Sri Lanka's southwestern region.
The Sri Lanka Spurfowl is a medium-sized bird with a distinctive appearance. It has a plump body, short wings, and a relatively long tail. The plumage of the male is predominantly brown with fine black barring, while the female tends to have a more mottled appearance. Both genders have a red facial patch and distinctive yellow legs.
As its name suggests, the Sri Lanka Spurfowl possesses spurs on its legs, a characteristic common among members of the Phasianidae family. These spurs are used primarily for territorial defense and during mating displays.
Due to habitat loss and fragmentation, the Sri Lanka Spurfowl population is declining, and it is considered vulnerable. Conservation efforts are underway to protect its remaining habitat and ensure the survival of this endemic species.
