Sri Lanka (Ceylon) has been playing rugby since the 1800s. Their only challenge is size (no food to eat for many generations) like westerners and Fijians were able to.Even Africans eat more than many Sri Lankans. Also overpopulation make people less physical.

Agreed! I just had a look at world rugby rankings (that's for the full 15 versions, not sevens). Sri Lanka are ranked 43rd. They are putting their, sub-condinent neighbours, to shame. Well mate , other than rugby we Indians lead the subcontinent charts in Most of the sports . If you look at other sport's like Badminton,Hockey,Squash, Volleyball.. India tops at everywhere 💪. Where as in football we are the only subcontinent nation under 100 in FIFA rankings whereas our brothers Sri Lanka are at 200+.

Next month we have the best opportunity to go there. Not world cup. Olympics. Japan not participating in the Asian Olympic qualifier, if full strength Sri Lankan side can make an upset there direct spot guaranteed. If not world qualifier sure spot if we become 2nd or 3rd.

School rugby leagues are a huge thing in Sri Lanka actually. Almost all the national rugby players of Sri Lanka hail from Isipathana college colombo 05. They are known as the kings of rugby in Sri Lanka...

Ceylon has the one of the oldest in Rugby School Games, played between Royal College ( The Eton of Ceylon ) Colombo 7 vs Trinity College Kandy, fought for the Bradby Shield in two full legs, one full test in Colombo and the second test in Kandy. The winner is decided of the two test scores put together. FYI, Bradby served as the Head Master of both these Public Schools at different points of his career. Also, one of the oldest Cricket matches between two Public Schools are played between Royal College ( The Eton of Ceylon) and St. Thomas College Mt. Lavinia, the Big Match known as the Battle of The Blues, in 2019, they played the 140th match = 140 years of annual 3 day test Match. Likewise the two schools have been Rowing the Royal Thomian Regatta for ions.

Sri Lanka can be better in 7s. Politics, lack of funds, Lack of exposure holding them back. Few years ago when Sri Lanka playing with Samoa they went to the half time as 14-0 leading but Samoa went to win it by 33-14. What I meant is SL has the capacity without any foreign players.

the truth is Lot of SL rugby players don't give 100% at the international level. Because clubs warn them if they got injured they will not give them contracts or cancel. playing SL national team doesn't give them any financial benefits and most of the players say goodbye to rugby after play a few years and go for full-time jobs.

Sl can rank way better than that. but the problem is SL don't play rugby with higher ranking teams. Most of the European countries that ranked better than SL are not really good. But they always get matches because of the funds that have to maintain the ranks. The other thing is SL in the only country play rugby with 100% local people. Jpana+hongkong+malaysia play with the players from outside the country and they gave them citizenship with big money. Japan doesn't help asisn countries to improve rugby.

It is predominantly a Public School game in Ceylon played by Royal College ( The Eton of Ceylon ), Trinity College, St. Thomas College, St. Peter's College, Wesley College which were all started by The British Masters. There are a few offshoots of locally founded schools by nationalist Buddhists that have copied the game over the years. The majority of the people are Cricket fanatics and the second sport is Football ( Soccer ) and Rugby has not reached the grass roots yet.
