A collection of Photographs of Colombo Town, taken during British Colonial Era (1815-1948) downloaded through Internet. With profound thanks to photographers (Expatriates for sure) , we are able to view how Colombo had been before 100 years ago. They wouldn't have expected an "Internet Era" to distribute their valuable efforts which we are in now. Lets View, conserve and pass them for our next Generations

I'm very glad to watch this video..very few videos are there about ceylon..I can see ceylon was a great country even before100 years from now. maybe I was in my previous life when these pictures were taken. It's like a dream to see the people who were lived 100 years before ,and they never knew they would be seen in after 100 years.maybe my relatives were in these pictures, but sadly I don't know them..ty for some past British and American people who had taken these pictures.

My wife Patricia was born in Colombo Her mother was half Portuguese half Dutch yes a Dutch Berger, Her surname was Anderiesz and we assumed from what she told us that her family had a shipping chandler company. Her father was in the Army a sergeant major half Irish half English his name was Tyrrell I presumed they lived in the barracks.

"Memoirs of Lee Kuan Yew (About Ceylon)" According to Lee, when Ceylon gained independence in 1948, it was the classic model of gradual evolution to independence. Ceylon was Britain’s model Commonwealth country. He says, after the war, Ceylon was a good middle size country with fewer than 10 million people. It had a relatively good standard of education with two universities of high quality in Colombo and Kandy teaching in English, a civil service largely of locals, and experience in representative government starting with city council elections in the 1930s.

Lee Kuan Yew swept the streets of Singapore himself in the 1950's? to show what towns can look like. My hubby was based at Changi camp as it was then before the split during the 'Emergency. Malaya, as it was had the' Tunku' and also so calm , not much crime either , less frenetic, noisy and stressful and our plane landed in KL in a rubber plantation which I found wonderful.We had to fly there as there was trouble and curfew in Ceylon as it was and could not fly direct to the UK .I was mystified hearing a lovely song we heard often called Teran Bulang played each night on the radio and was then told it was the National Anthem.My hubby spent 5 years in Malaya and wanted to return. Wonderful country too Mr Unais.

I cannot thank your enough so for this Fantastic video of such lovely elegant buildings even the POST Office . Remember being taken to Cargills , Apothecary's , Millers etc and the Sunday Tea Rooms on the corner to eat sausages and mash and Ice cream(knicker, bocker Glories, for a treat!. The GFH looked so different without the esplanade etc.It was once an awful place just when the British first arrived . See , Penry Lewis's 'Tombstones and Monuments. Whenever I hear folk complain about those times which were by no means perfect, there is one thing one cannot deny, the British did leave some wonderful architecture behind in those salubrious tree lined areas, amidst parks. Flower Rd with its carpets of pink Acacia blooms alas, now no more . Those HUGE shade giving trees , always in memory as I was born in Ceylon as it was in 1942 .and am a S.Lankan altho I have a British ancestor who set anchor in the 1820's. I always wondered what the Cinnamon Gardens looked like and those jungles of the south. The Ella gap never fails to make me gaze in wonderment . I will never return to Hambantota and other such places where the jungle reached the sea as it is where we dreamed of going each year for a treat We will no longer be able to share now that it is to be another City and major Oil Port , something too horrible to contemplate .Makes a lump come to one's throat I must admit. Wish I could purchase of book of this scenery ?

Really good collection of photos of Ceylon...the pearl of the Indian ocean...Nostalgia is the word. Thanks to the Portuguese, Dutch and British who came here and did so much for this beautiful island. It would have much much better if we were still under British rule because since they handed over the country to us in 1948, all we have seen is chaos. Open robbery, murder, theft, lies, deceptions, false promises and the list goes on. The country has gone to the dogs as they say. Nothing has developed...take for instance the railroad...we have not constructed even a mile after the British left. This country has so much to offer, but the cruel, crooked politicians have sold this country to every dick tom and harry.
@gmhwa692

Ashley Rodrigo you are so foolish to say such and show your ignorance of prosper Heladiva had pre colonisation and the robbery done to our nation by leaving behind ‘democracy’ to continue the robbery and a political system of which you have described well. Are you a colonial left baggage yourself?
