Kandyan dance is a traditional sri lankan dance which comes under the upper country style and the word mangalam is as previously stated a blessing, this word is only used for danced that a based on passing blessings. if you're interested look up wannam or ves, these are both kandyan dance styles 8D

Hello, as you might already know Sri Lanka is ethnically very diverse, this is a Sinhalese dance while 'Bharatanatyam' is Tamil, 'Kandyan dance' is a form of traditional Sinhalese dance. However, my knowledge is actually limited to properly answer your question about the terminology, listening to the drum beat and rhythm I'm tempted to say this dance is a 'Kandyan dance' but I'm not sure, there are various other traditional Sinhalese dance styles like 'Up country', 'Down country' etc

Hey, tamilonthestreet, there is no need to denigrate other dancers or dance styles. that is what starts all the fights. each dance style is as good as the other. if you dont like other style, just ignore it.

What a mesmerising performance! Just out of curiosity, is the word "Mangalam" part of Kandyan dance terminology like "Thillana" and "Alarippu" in Bharatanatyam, or is it the name of a different Sri Lankan dance form?

Mangalam is a word from Sanskrit, the ancient Indian language, and it means something like "let it be blessed" or "let it be greeted". In classical Indian Hindu dance forms, it is a name of choreographies that differ a lot, but they are all invocations or greetings, usually to Earth, Wind, Fire, Sun... etc. As she says that it's an invocational dance, "mangalam" really could have this meaning in this case, but I'm not sure - I'm not an expert.
