What a concert - full of sastriya and sampradaya. He can traverse all the available octaves effortlessly and render the kritis with full bhava and more importantly bhakthi. Unassuming and down-to -earth, I don' t think he even thinks for a moment that he is the performer. This is the quality of a true devotee who performs for the pleasure of his Creator. Even his disciples exhibit the same quality. If he is not bestowed with Sangeetha Kalanidhi, the award itself is doing no honour to itself !!

Unfortunately Sangeeta Kalanidhi doess not hold any value. Several yesteryear stalwarts have been over looked. I wonder if there is any criteria to get this award. I guess one needs to lobby for it.

When the greatest award BHARATH RATHNA is not free from being a political freebie why not SKN also follow suit.

I like Vijaya Siva not only for his manodharma but also for his pronunciation eg.adisidalu yashoda purandaradasa kruti.

You have written that you like Sri Vijaya Siva not only for his manodharma but also for his pronunciation of words. In the very first krithi he sang, Shree Deekshitar's Shanka Chakra Gadhapanim, in Poornachandrika raga, I was astonished to hear him pronounce these four words: Gaathram, Nethram, Paathram, and Kshethram, as: Gaatham, Netham, Paatham, and Kshetham. He omits the "R"s. I have observed that when he sings krithis composed in Sanskrit, he does similar mistakes. This is a common problem with most Tamil singers when they sing krithis composed in Sanskrit. Many Sangeetha Kalanidhis do similar mistakes also. This is not meant as a criticism of Sri Vijaya Siva (He is a very good vocalist), but it is only an observation that I have made, and I have often wondered why can't these vocalists consult with some professors of Sankrit regarding how to pronounce Sanskrit words? After all there is a Sanskrit college right in Mylapore, not far from the Music Academy. He can also consult musicians who know Sanskrit, musicians like violinist Sri Sriramkumar, who has accompanied him many times. I know that when non-Tamilians (like me) sing compositions in Tamil, they mispronounce Tamil words also. Learning both Tamil and Sanskrit will perhaps solve the problem. True. Indeed, I too have noticed in many concerts this grave lapse. Horrible, is Jesudas concert. He is comfortable only with malayalam. Tamil, telugu and Samskrutham pronouncing, I will say its biting. Except a very few singers, none give importance to pronunciation and they take for granted audience ignorance, except a few like us. They give more importance to Brigas, raga alapanas, which is not at all necessary. Happy at least the tradition is observed.

@@yeshprab u r wrong. Better u hear the song properly, in fact he pronounces it right. Sometimes while listening certain letters will not be heard properly as we will be engrossed.

Hi Shankar Narayanan. Thank you very much for your comment. You have made a bold statement, "u r wrong. Better u hear the song properly, in fact he pronounces it right." Before I wrote my comment, I had listened to his singing carefully, and when I heard him mispronouncing the words, I was so surprised that I listened to it again. I had no problem hearing his pronunciation clearly. After reading your comment I listened to it again, even though there was no need. I standby my comment. He mispronounced these four words: Gaathram, Nethram, Paathram, and Kshethram. I also noticed that he mispronounces the word Gadhaa as Gada (soft da instead of the hard dha). A few days ago, I attended a concert by Sangeetha Kalaanidhi Sowmya at the Arkay Convention center. When singing Angarakam aashrayamyaham, she mispronounced the words mithram and sukalathram as mittham and sukalattham (Just like Vijaya Siva !). When the mridangist was tuning his mridangam, I asked a rasika (an elderly Tamil gentleman) sitting near me why so many Tamil vocalists mispronounce these words all the time. He replied, "That is because Tamil does not have all the alphabets that Sanskrit has. When vocalists who can not read Sanskrit script read Deekshitar's composition written in Tamil script, these mistakes happen. That is quite common. In Tamil, you can not write Kalathram and mithram. She also mispronounced Raashi as raasi." I have studied Sanskrit as my second language up to B. Sc. level, at St. Aloysius college, Mangalore: That is, a total of ten years from the sixth grade to B.Sc. These are some of the texts I studied: Kalidasa's Kumara sambhava, Abhijnana Shakuntala, Megha dootha, and Bhartr Hari's Vairagya Shataka. Let me assure you I know Sankrit. I would not have made that comment if I was not sure of it.
