In this episode of "ISKCON Kirtan Ministry Presents | Unfiltered Podcast Every Week with HH Sri Krishna Chaitanya Swami" features a very special devotee, a dear disciple of A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada, His Grace Srutakirti Prabhu.
His Grace Srutakirti Prabhu is a cherished disciple of Srila Prabhupada, known for his remarkable journey from a Catholic upbringing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to becoming a dedicated follower of ISKCON. After pursuing psychology at Lasalle College, his life took a profound turn during Earth Day in 1971 when he encountered ISKCON devotees in a Philadelphia park. Intrigued, he and a friend delved deeper into the teachings and visited an ISKCON temple, setting the course for their spiritual journey.
His path led him to New Vrindavan, where he discovered that Srila Prabhupada would be visiting New York City. Prior to his initiation, a memorable and humorous encounter with Srila Prabhupada, detailed in his book "What's the Difficulty" (2003), left a lasting impression. Following his initiation, Srutakirti Prabhu served diligently in New Vrindavan, learning various services directly from Srila Prabhupada himself, including cooking, and eventually becoming his personal attendant.
Accompanying Srila Prabhupada on numerous international travels, Srutakirti Prabhu holds the distinction of being his most frequent personal servant. His firsthand experiences have made him a revered storyteller, adept at recounting Srila Prabhupada's pastimes. Today, he passionately spreads the teachings of ISKCON worldwide, dedicated to fulfilling Srila Prabhupada’s mission.
His Grace Srutakirti Prabhu, in addition to his extensive service and preaching endeavours, is also an integral member of the management team at ISKCON Vrindavana. His role in the management team underscores his commitment to the organization's growth and continued spiritual guidance within the community.

From Chintamani dasi: Srila Prabhupada once stopped the kirtan to tell me not to hit the gongs so loud, and then we continued the kirtan. I was so embarrassed! It was June, 1969 in New Vrindavana. There were 2 gongs hanging from the ceiling. He was present for every morning aratika for around a month. We always had harmonium, kartals and mrdanga. There were only around 10 devotees. It was so sweet. Chintamani dasi. Also, why do so many kirtan leaders now sing Hare Kri-sha-na when Krishna is 2 syllables? Are we now the Hare Kri-sha-na movement?

Once in Hyderabad a sanyasi was getting into using the sarod, harmonium etc into the kirtan. Prabhupada then told us to use only mrudanga and kartals saying we were prone to enjoy the music rather the serving to please the Lord. It is a yagna not for our sense gratification, name and fame. But i guess offensive kirtan is still better than no kirtan. Haribol!

Yes, you are completely right, the important point is to attract Krishna. And the mood of the kirtaniyas and the other devotees is the first point. But, please consider, as Krishna is always Krishna, but a nice devotional way to dress the deities, or cooking with devotion a nice healthy prasada can attract people to Krishna Consciousness, if people are attracted to stay in kirtan more time, with more feeling by having devotional kirtans that are also musically beautiful, it will please Krishna even more. This is the service of music people in our movement. Like artists have so many services, or cooks have service. To do nice musical kirtans for Krishna's pleasure and preaching scope is the musician and singing people service. Everyone should chant Hare Krishna, but it is surely their service. And it is nice that they are doing it at their best capacity. People will want to stay more in the kirtan. Obviously everyone had to do it for Krishna's pleasure. Krishna is surely not limited to one musical style. And regarding Srila Prabhupada stressing shaved hair, he didn't asked George Harrison or outside working grihasthas to shave hair. He stressed that in their own position, they preach Krishna's glories. Now young managers in the world are almost always with short nicely kept beard and hair, so it is socially acceptable that they look that way. Not like in Caitanya's or hippy time. So from their position they are often doing a very very nice preaching job that Srila Prabhupada is surely appreciating and that we should appreciate too, as loving parents or big brothers and sisters. But, yes, always to please Krishna. And many are doing an amazing preaching job actually! 🥰 ❤ Ys, Sri Lalita dasi

Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu did kirtan with mridanga and karatala and that is perfection. Other things are attempting to improve on that, I don't think the harmonium improves on the perfection that is mridanga and karatala.
