Excellent rendition by Vidhushi Sriranjani santhanagopalan. She, with her melodiuos voice exhibited her vidwat in an awesome manner. Commencing with a nattai kriti, she followed up with a charming chandrajyoti (bAgAyanaiyya) Then came a sweet sahana (Sri kamalAmbikAyAm), Parvati ninnu nE (kalkada) and then a purandaradAsa kriti in kalyani (anjikin yAtakayya) followed by an abhang 'dEvAchiyE dhwAri' and a tillana in behag. The violin support by Vidwan Sayee rakshit was superb and his delineation of sahana a d kalyani deserves special mention. The laya support by the team was magnificent. True to the lineage of Sri Thanjavur Upendran, vidwan Praveen sparsh , with Vidwan Sunil kumar on ganjira gave a splendid performance 👍

Sahana at times reminded me of TNS, no wonder. In Kathakali music they say Deepa Palanad is the one who keeps the school of Kalamandalam Unnikrishnakurup ašan going still high, in a strange way Sriranjini's raga alapana and neraval resemblances to Sheshagopalabani is no coincidence. As blissful would be Palanad Divakaran be with the way things are going, so would be Santhanagopalan sir too. This was pointed to me by the famed journalist Sreevalsan Thiyyadi once, and since then I always thought of this similarity. Kalyani was well ornamented and grand, I very much liked it. Having heard that Nattai kriti sung by the great Santhanam sir, this was another distinctly diverse musical syntax, but this was as refreshing as the past, only very rarely present reflects that quality. Kalgada was also touching some strange nerves, and I am indebted to her neurotransmitter balance as much as I am to my own ganglia. Chandrajyothi, that specific kriti I had only listened to Kalyanaraman sir before, and as is the previous case, here too this new fragrance was as refreshing as history. Thanks also to Sayee Rakshith, Praveen Sparsh and Sunil Kumar, they provided the perfect accompaniment, viloin made me breathless at times and the Thaniavarthanam kept my mind in a higher plane for a while, also bouquet of gratitude to Ranjani Memorial Trust for bring this to us.
