"The Sahara of Snow" Part 1 and 2, from Bill Bruford's album "One of a Kind". 1979. This is not my property and upload's only purpose is sharing.

This is probably one of the best of its genre records, hands-down. Holdsworth, the side, Jeff Berlin, is a beast. The bass that he lays down on this album especially in one of a kind part one and two is just the cream of the crop. I’m sure this guy is well known in England, but in my opinion, Jeff Berlin is one of the best bass players alive. We not even talk about Bruford at this point. Would’ve loved to have seen this live.

Dave Stewart here. 'The Sahara of Snow' Part 1 (0.00-5.22) was entirely written by Bill Bruford, Part 2 was co-written by Bill & Eddie Jobson. The rhythmic piano patterns Bill wrote in Pt.1 were great fun to play, and I worked out my own keyboard parts for Pt.2 based on the pre-written chord sequence Bill showed me. HTH

I love this whole piece, both parts, but as I listen, I really am mostly waiting patiently for Allan to shine at the end. His solo here is a wonderful example of how often he finds the surprising, but somehow perfect note or phrase and the perfect time. A unique artist and maestro whom I miss daily.

This whole album, a masterpiece, one of my deserted island picks, has stood the test of time. I listen to it now, as frequently as I did when I first discovered it back in the 1980's. This band ranks up there with Return to Forever, Weather Report and Mahavishnu Orchestra. It may not have been a front line fighting unit, like those bands (they were all straight out of the Miles Davis school of musical upheaval), but they were the best of the flanking groups, IMO. Bruford did have it's Miles Davis connection however, through Allan Holdsworth who, of course, was a principle player and composer in Tony Williams' Lifetime (Tony being the drummer for one of Miles' most pivotal and impactful musical periods).
@honeywoodpilot4 жыл бұрын
I concur with your synopsis. It's almost sort of spiritual the way the two drummers complement each other.
@hubbsllc2 жыл бұрын
I agree - RTF, MO, and WR were the triumvirate of the fusion groups (as you say, all descended from Miles Davis) but Bruford was not second-string in any objective way.

Gonna be the first to say it. Bill may be the only colleague of Allan’s to heap praise and/or thank him even to this day posthumously for his efforts. The others (John Wetton) surprisingly seem to fire off some disparaging comments about his session work and “group hopping”. Loyalty in the music business is often questionable.

Interesting tune, several sections that don't repeat, lots of ambient synth stuff, Holdsworth dropping in from another galaxy. I used to always marvel at that type of film editing style composition, very different from song form, sort of a mini-vacation from song form.

Loved this piece from the first time I heard it! It definitely conjures up mental images of bleak wintry snowscapes at either the North or South Pole (watch out for angry walruses or polar bears!).
