Dan runs through various options for anchoring your stationary rope climbing system in the canopy and the pros and cons to each system.
SRT - Stationary rope techniques / Single rope technique:
Within the Arboricultural industry the term SRT describes a climbing system when the climbing rope anchored in the canopy or at the base and the climber is ascending & descending on a stationary/fixed rope, meaning the climbing rope is not moving when ascending/descending.

I leave the throw line connected to the tail. You can use throw line to pull rope back instead of leaving a very long tail. This method is especially good when you do not have rope long enough.

Great video, I understand placement of friction saver, but if rope is equal lengths what I don't understand is how you tie alpine butterfly and place near friction saver and still be able to retrieve? Not bringing tree down just pruning. Thanks for video look forward to more.

As this video is quite old now, is this still legit ? Can a big guy with a load of kit REALLY hang on 10 mm prussic cord ? I've got a hank of that line and a bunch of rings in my bag, I'm thinking of making one up. Barrel knot a ring on one end, and a figure eight knot on the other for a carabiner ? Now that I think of it... that is what's on my hitchclimber ! But it just seems nuts to use it as a cambium saver. Is it safe life support ?

I'm trying to picture how, do you end up needing a rope length 3 times the height of your TIP? Or is there some throwline trickery involved? Edit: I think I figured it out - you just tie the butterfly on the tail after the end of the rope is pulled through the rings, but before you pull it all the way to the ground.

Hi , thanks for the interesting videos, so much to learn here! I was wondering, when you use the alpine butterfly, aren't you eliminating the possibility of a rescue in case of injury? The alpine butterfly is basically replacing your anchor at the bottom right?

Brilliant! I really like your videos. They are very helpful and I like your way of instructing. Clear and on point. I am not an arborist, but I am a gardener and do a bit of climbing with Ddrt in largish old fruit trees as it is now. I am longing to climb our oak at my job and remove some dead wood but I will wait for an arborist friend of mine to do my virgin climb together with him as to feel safer and learn some tricks of the trade from him. Safety first is the way I want to go and I wouldn't do the climb without some hands on instructions and help. Keep on with your great videos! Kind Regards from Piffen

In one of your other videos (with comments disabled) you tied an alpine butterfly knot very quickly and efficiently. I'd love to see a demonstration of that technique. I use the "wrap around the hand twice" technique and it it does seem a bit awkward if not inefficient.

On your last set up, couldn't the alpine butterfly and carabiner easily pass through other carabiner? I realize if this did happen the system would act like a choker and you wouldn't fall, but you would still abruptly drop a few feet? Just curious, thanks.

The next to the last example was the friction saver. Could you add a carabiner to the large ring. So when you pull the friction saver into the tree with your throw line the throwline will be passing through the small ring and the carabiner? Now it's the same as the last setup which is your favorite. Bingo, you now have two favorites. Carabiner should be rated and triple action of course. Unless I've missed something. Thank you

Cracking idea. I think it could be improved further by using two lengths of of rope and sandwiching them together like the linkage on a rope wrench. Either with a sewn or velcro fabric, something a bit shiny like leather, truck tarp or even an old skinny bike tyre. This will give you a slightly stiffer and much much more durable anchor to use for a long time. One that doesn't get saturated with algae, moss, bark slime and moisture every time it's used.

just watch the video and thought the same thing. if that ring and the knot can fit through the karabiners then there are some brown pants moments waiting to happen. the cabin saver and stopper knot would be my choice. personal I drt all the time but slowly coming round to the idea of srt especially on pines.
@ClimbingArborist
@ClimbingArborist 8 жыл бұрын
+Chris Brown With the multi sling, you can choose any carabiner, if you choose one that the ring can't fit through then there is no possibility. The way in which the force is loaded into the system I don't think the ring would pass through regardless (my opinion), but there are the other options shown e.g.. delta link & 2 carabiners and just use a retrieval ball.
@chrisbrown40
@chrisbrown40 8 жыл бұрын
+Climbing Arborist I agree it is probably not likely that the small ring would pass through, but I've had my rope tie itself around a limb just being pulled from the tree, so if there is the slightest chance, I would bet money it would happen to me lol :) Depending on the angle you are working at and the tension in the line, I could see it happening and being a real pain to go fix. The new singing tree quickie, albeit expensive, would probably be great in this application. www.treestuff.com/store/catalog.asp?category_id=181&item=15672 This was a great video! Being able to quickly and easily advance my tie in when climbing srt has been the biggest drawback for me and it looks like this video solved that. Thanks and keep up the good work.

Just curious where you purchase that multi-sling. I can't seem to find one like that. And where it might be applicable on a smaller limb, can you wrap the sling more than once around a limb and use it safe in that manner?

Very curious how you mention retrieval of the alpine butterfly with a few redirects could potentially damage your rope from the friction. Is that any different from using a prusik loop for ascension descension and the wear it puts on the prusik? Really enjoy your videos man!! Long time subscriber! Thanks! Lucas
@Iocun
@Iocun Жыл бұрын
Some differences: First, for a prusik loop, you'd generally use particularly heat-resistant fibers, which will withstand the friction longer than a climbing line. Second, the prusik loop is relatively cheap compared to a whole climbing rope, so you can afford to regularly change it out.

@ClimbingArborist
@ClimbingArborist 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks dude. There are a few factors like the area you live which will reflect the height of the trees etc, but I would definitely suggest 60m because you set the length of your working line, so don't have the same issues as you do climbing a smaller tree with a long rope with DdRT.
