The only reason i can think of for the big cannon connected to Shin Getter is that the cannon isn't any more powerful than Shin's regular getter beam, but it is however much more accurate, and necessary to hit the Angel from the ground. I guess that Asuka isn't skilled enough to simply fly up into the stratosphere and blast the angel from point blank range. Also note that Asuka fights on the ground, despite Shin Getter 1 being the aerial configuration.

Judging by the footage i'd say she isn't. Shin Getter 1 is an aerial configuration, and yet Asuka fights on the ground. Furthermore, in order to hit the angel she uses that cannon, Ryoma would simply fly up in the stratosphere and blast it with a point blank getter beam.

Wish there were english subtitles. But I think I get the basic plot. Asuka is going off on her own too much, so they have her and the other eva pilots use Shin Getter to try and encourage teamwork.

イベント自体は面白いけどDDって全然動かないですね。 ATフィールドも演出無しで終わってたり（短縮設定ONとかしてる？）、ゲッタドラゴンのビームが首だけクイッと向けるだけとか、違和感が半端ない。
