Thanks for a great presentation in this video. My one crossing from Mantowac to Ludington was made at night in 1973, when there were rail cars on board. I was driving a Land Rover Dormobile which had a gearbox failure which only had 1 st and 4th and no reverse. I told the crew about this and they put me on at the head end facing inboard. When we arrived at Michigan I said I required assistance to push me off as I could not backup. The crew chief said “we don’t push anything”. However it quickly became obvious no on could drive off as the vehicle lane was blocked. So despite the statement, they did indeed push us off with several deckhands. Managed to get all the way home near Albany NY with that Land Rover when the rest of the transmission quit. That trip across the lake was as memorable as yesterday despite all the years that have gone by.

Yup, Thats the way it works. They have to get you off before the others can get off. They're good people and I figured they'd move you off the Badger one way or another. I love riding on her at least once a year. Glad you made it home.

I really enjoyed this video. The information was easy to follow and seemed pretty complete. I've been a lifelong railfan, and am now a career railroader as a locomotive engineer for a local commuter railroad. Over the years, I've become familiar with how steam works on a railroad. Maritime applications of steam have always fascinated me too, but I've had little exposure to it. This video seems to really explain how the ship functions, from the basics of steam, to the logistics of the crew on board. Thank you! It's really amazing to think that our early industrial success and innovation, as well as continued practicality today really boils down (pun intended) to the basics of burning a fuel to boil water. Sure, some of the systems to produce more of it, and then harness it to use it are complicated. But, it all starts with the basic principal of boiling water to create steam.

Massive ship. Remember breaking ice for the Badger into Ludington. Remember seeing the Spartan tied up thereafter it was "decommissioned". Not sure where she is now, that was back in 80/81. Great narrated video. USCGC Mobile Bay crew member 80/81

I can just imagine the wonderful smells coming from this lovely old ship, coal burning, hot oil, wonderful. So glad she was never converted to burn oil. Long may this old girl keep plying the waters.

In 2019 I visited my son who worked near Ludington, MI. I sure wish I could have gone to WI and back on the Badger just for a sail, but its a bit too pricey for just a day cruise.

@@brockjohnson1401 my hope is someday if able to I will buy her and restore her to her glory days.
@brockjohnson14014 жыл бұрын
@@Finnmarken91 Well that's what we are doing and tons of money great volenteeres later we still have much to do, we still need a permanent dock, we still need to restore lots of the rooms and we still need to get the public involved. People have looked into restoring her and sailing her again but, it would cost millions and you would also need around 200 crew just to operate her, that was one of the reasons she was removed as she was not efficient any more. So the best bet is to restore her and give her a permanent dock and keep her as a floating museum.

I think I was about 11 or 12 in the early 70’s when I took the Badger over from Ludington to Manitowoc , it was so much fun. I couldn’t believe the color of the water in the middle of Lake Michigan it was beautiful kind of a aqua color. I wonder what it’s like now ? I do remember the waves were pretty big which kept me kinda dizzy for the first half of the trip…sure am glad I got to experience such a great time though…👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
