3 жыл бұрын

The extraordinary story of how an SS unit robbed the Reichsbank in Berlin during the last days of the furious battle in 1945 and escaped to Bavaria with over 130 million dollars of loot.
All monetary figures are extrapolated from 'Nazi Gold' by Ian Sayer and Douglas Botting, the best book on this subject.
Dr. Mark Felton is a well-known British historian, the author of 22 non-fiction books, including bestsellers 'Zero Night' and 'Castle of the Eagles', both currently being developed into movies in Hollywood. In addition to writing, Mark also appears regularly in television documentaries around the world, including on The History Channel, Netflix, National Geographic, Quest, American Heroes Channel and RMC Decouverte. His books have formed the background to several TV and radio documentaries. More information about Mark can be found at: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Fe...

The scar on Skorzeny's face is called "Schmiss" in german. It's from his student time when it was common to duell each other in a "Mensur", a academic fencing bout without face protection. It was a sign of honour and bravery and the ladies liked it like todays woman like a tattoo on a man's body. Skorceny had done 14 Mensuren in his time as student. The allies gave him later the fitting name "Scarface".

Richtig. A bizarre custom by today’s social standards, but then I’ve always held tattoos in the same category. The Germans weren’t completely nuts; a nice Schmiss or two, loss of an ear, even a nose was one thing, but loss of an eye was not. When they dueled, they always wore goggles to protect their eyes. What this did for their aim was questionable, but there it is. Oh, and they invariably also wore a ridiculous pillbox cap, cocked over on a slant. Strange…

Dr Felton, thank you not only for your wonderful research but also the quality of the presentation. I was born just one day before the outbreak of war, so have lived through these and many other troubled times. Obviously we did not have access to such recent history in my youth and of course we learned of certain things via the press but never thought I would be brought up to date by a "science fiction media" as was at that time. Keep up the good work.

@@Wings_of_foam What about the story of - Hitler, they claim, escaped punishment and lived out his life in tranquility in Patagonia until his death in 1962 at the age of 73. Google It. It was a period of conspiracy and I believe that Hitler did run away because lots of countries politicians were involved in WW-2 that is why he got support to escape. Even America knew that he was alive somewhere in Argentina. They never exposed him because of their own fear. They kept it in archive those data in a Confidential Documents. The photo which they published of his dead body looked like double/duplicate of him. In past many places he was using his double or duplicate person to miss guide his enemies attempt to kill him. PLUS they never showed any one’s body his girlfriend or anyone who was with him. They have Never shown any proof about his death.

Realize that he was a full-on, devote Nazi and had intimate knowledge of the Final Solution and likely many other Nazi War Crimes. So, despite being a special forces officer with daring and drive, he's also a morally bankrupt, racist sociopath, just like nearly everyone of the SS...... So rather than "A Bridge Too Far," "Force 10 from Navarone," or "Saving Private Ryan," if even remotely realistic and truthful, it would be more akin to a "Schindler's List" type of movie. These guys aren't heroes, they're monsters...... (and while all soldiers in war face ethical dememnas, and individual soldiers and even units can commit war crimes, the WW2 Germans and Japanese had institutionalized 'war crimes,' taken to a SOP level; they are in a category unto themselves.) Finally, "weren't able to find sufficient evidence to prosecute" doesn't make him innocent, especially with the company he kept: if you're one of Hitler's favorites, you're bad news.....

I read three years ago, that there is currently 12 billion deutschemarks still in circulation in Germany. Deutschemarks which can be redeemed at the Bundesbank for Euro currency. A lot of the Deutschemarks are probably savings hidden under mattresses, in attics, in garden sheds, etc. The point here is that people store loot, ill-gotten or legitimately acquired, in lots of places. The paper currencies - Reichmarks - were probably all redeemed by the perpetrators in the years after the war ended. But the bullion and gold coins? Much more difficult to redeem given their history. Great video Dr.Felton. thanks
