Another fun parallel trick using the Waves SSL 4000E V2 plugin in ProTools, adding some height & size to a snare drum. Like my content? Buy me a coffee: buymeacoffee.c... I have no affiliation with Waves, SSL, or Avid

The gate stuff is cool but only works when the snare is consistent in volume and style. If it is sidestick combo etc I split the track and use 2 different instances.
@JPHenryAudioАй бұрын
Thats a good approach! Sidestick usually needs a diff EQ too

Any concern about phase with parallel EQ?
@JPHenryAudioАй бұрын
as long as it sounds good, no, not for a mono signal. If it's an issue, it'll be pretty obvious.

great stuff - whats the pitch 2 thing u got going on the tiled room and white noise tracks?

Mister, you did this because the snare bottom was wacky? Then you used a copy of the snare to bring more live to it? I understood correctly?
@JPHenryAudioАй бұрын
Yes, I wanted to bring out the sound of the snares but the bottom mic was unusable. So, i copied the top mic and EQ'd it etc.

Call me a biased old school Hardcore drummer, but that snare needs some CRACK, then it will be jacking that energy, if its fronted. Great vid for the console tips tho thx.
@JPHenryAudioАй бұрын
I def know what you mean! this is def more of a metal snare than that oldschool NYHC sound
@sword-and-shieldАй бұрын
@@JPHenryAudio Hahaha, I hear ya, even in HC snare tones varied wildly, and should. It was my opinion, and preference as a drummer, that giving her the right amount "crack" always brought the energy, at least with our tunes, this in either, recording, mixing, foh suggestions for live shows, etc. I miss it, with most things being put out these days, it is the first thing that disappears with any dynamics crush, without proper effort to maintain it. So many tunes I hear that miss out on a strong energy drive or build up because of the lack of lettin her just do some...Crack...lol....thx for the vid brother.

Couple of questions is it worth doing this for the drums sounds I use on my Yamaha mu128? This module is somewhat dated and I'm certainly not going to get any kind of modern drum sounds out of it. That being said it has been very useful for the style of music that I write. I am by no means a newbie to mixing or any of that stuff and to be honest have been happy with some of the drum tracks imitating an actual set I've gotten on this mu128 using the typical routing techniques one should be doing for this sort of thing. Last question really like the SSL channel strip plugins. I do find some of the more sophisticated ones use a lot of CPU on my Dell laptop which has 16 gigs of RAM and it's an i5 chip. With a budget of $700 is there a PC setup you would recommend on the typical bedroom studio recorder that will never have a full band but multi-instrumentalist that uses might amps and keyboards and multiple vocals with all the effects I like to use judiciously.
@JPHenryAudioАй бұрын
Tough to say, i'm not familiar with the mu128 sounds, but it really depends more on the overall song mix and your goals for how the drums sit with everything else. I'm running this on a Mac Mini M2 with 8G RAM and it's fine for this stuff, but I couldn't record more than a couple tracks at a time with it.
@tjmitch57Ай бұрын
@Henryamps Thanks I'll just have to try your snare demo using the mu128 & SSL channel strip to get an idea. I know nothing replaces live drum recording but I have been happy with this multi-terminal sound module mu128 for drums & have been successful with getting them to sit in mixed rather nicely. Your answer about what you're using to record with also confirmed my thoughts that some SSL plugins use more CPU than other plugin which is fine I like them and know now when to use them. One last thing about the mu128 my musician friends always point out how well Brass and Horn 📯 sounds sound on the songs I use them on. Thanks for the videos you do on here they're really helpful.

Thanks a bunch for these! Keep the SSL tricks coming 🙂 Does this trick work for Toms as well?
@JPHenryAudioАй бұрын
in theory, it should work for bringing out specific frequencies in just about anything... just a matter of finding the right frequency that you want to accentuate in each tom.
