In fact it's not very unusual to record with a microphone in "eight" pattern singing to the back capsule, as sometimes you want a darker voice and some microphones have this effect (they shouldn't), it's more typical in ribbon mics. I cannot see if the NT2 is in "eight" pattern, anyway.

Pablo Vega This mic has switchable polar patterns. He could be recording with a figure 8 or omni directional polar pattern, in which case it doesn't matter whether you are facing the front/ back of the mic. IMHO, mic polar patterns are not particularly flawless, especially 'switchable' ones, so its best to initially face the front of the diaphragm towards the sound source for use as the product was intended. In their defense, they may have experimented with mic placement and found that their method best suits the sound they are going for.

+austin kirk Like the Royer 121. Royer actually recommends recording badge out since the back is so different. Darker. Pablo is completely right. I turn mics everyday in the studio to find the sound I want. There is no right or wrong in music just what sounds good.
