For years the obvious thing to me was to put a de-esser after the EQ like you suggested until I was lucky enough to have some secret sauce tricks passed to me from an industry legend who taught me to first de-ess your vocals and THEN put your top end in. Back then I think rather than use an EQ it was some one-knob waves thing that just pushed the top up but it was more or less just EQ or "air". Makes things sound nice and smooth while still keeping them airy. Was a gamechanger for me. Made vocals dope but also helped for any voice over work I did too.

One of the "Legends" said that he put DeEsser first even if it's doing nothing. He just feels better if DeEsser is fist in the chain

hi, sean... thank you for the demo.. ermm.. I actually ordered Motu M4 but unfortunately, I was told the m4 had some technical issues when reached at their store. so they suggest I use SSL 2. I'm glad that I made the right decision to have this. probably next week. I'm from Malaysia. :)

Maybe it's just me but I wish someone would just Solo the vocal and then let us finally hear it in the mix. It's really hard at least for my ears to differentiate the difference in the vocal sound with all the other instrument going on at the same time. When I want a good vocal sound, I Solo the vocal flat with no plugins and effects and then tweak and add things little by little. Just my 2 common cents.I know you did it for a while there but I would do it for the first three quarters of the video. I'm getting this Vocalstrip 2 with the SSL2 MKII inyrtface.

I always put autotune as the first in my chain, I think most people do, but you could try after, you would get a slightly different characteristic as tune almost almost effects the mids slightly, in my opinion in a pleasing way.

Yes, they both are free with the SSL2 interfaces. The plugins are excellent and cost more on their own than when you buy the SSL2.

It's recommended to clean the audio file before any processing that way you won't enhance any unwanted audio, there's a harsh/saturated/clipped on the letter "C" from "CAN" on the phrase: why CAN we have this conversation @ 3:42

Use waves c6 get a dehum to plug mic into if you have noise n hum... Or grounding problem

These destroy 15 year old waves plug ins ins that need revamp with new technology. All I can say is SSL needs more presets. Waves has tons and typically i roll through presets, pick closets sound and then tweak. These lack many presets so you must spend much more time dialing in. Please SSL update all with more presets! I bought one. Demoed the rest. They are great but I have not bought more due to lack of presets. If you add more presets you will sell more!

i don't think I'll ever understand demonstrating something using a horrible song as a base. That's why I appreciate Joe Gilder. His lessons are great, and his examples involve real songs, real music, people playing. Not computerized vox tracks so compressed and locked-in the emotion is sucked out. You could seriously employ robots to do this song.

Sean Divine Yes, I’m referring to the horrible pitch correction, and I’m fully aware the channel strip plug-in does not do that. Do you realize how unnecessarily distracting that is for someone used to making fine judgements of, and changes to, the sound of a recorded voice? I can’t believe this comes from SSL. I have used SSL products all my career and it’s no exaggeration to say SSL is known for hardware and software of the very highest quality. To give us a terribly recorded and treated vocal to make judgements about the quality of your new product’s processing is... I can’t even find the right words. Like demo-ing a Ferrari on a full set of space-saver temporary tires on a dirt road. Am I not making sense? Is there a new company using the SSL name and I never heard about it? Forgive my sarcasm, but the basis of my complaint is totally relevant.

Sean Divine Well, you must be very new at this. I have been recording singers, real ones, for decades. When I want to apply a process such as EQ, compression, the sort of things the product you are showing here is made for, I’m accustomed to judging those processes on the most appropriate portion of my recording that I can find in a given song. I don’t seek out a crap outtake with sloppy edits and bad performance for a very good reason. It’s pretty shocking that you work for SSL and can’t understand this very basic concept. Just amazed this kind of amateurism is actually being presented with the SSL name. I’ve been with the company for decades, enjoyed time with the founders and current management, and I can flatly guarantee they know nothing of this. Yet.
