A pet is a pet. Weather its a dog, cat, horse or a snake. They are a member of the family. Take good care of her.

Mary is a beloved youtube celebrity so of course she should be taken to the vet.

Just starting my coop! We have 10 birds about 4 weeks old, already the family's flock! People come in the house greet us as they walk passed us AND GO STRAIGHT TO THE CHICKENS! Thank you for all your videos!

Glad to hear it! Good luck with your new flock and let us know if you have any questions

Thanks for taking her to the vet, it was the right thing to do. Hopefully it didn't cost you guys too much.

Hopefully dear Bloody Mary will get better soon. Lucky you..you found a vet who knows chickens. One of my chicks had a hurt leg but I didn't find any vet. Thank God after a few weeks, she got better.
@Goodbrod6 жыл бұрын
Yes you should. Her life is your responsibility and letting her suffer needlessly is cruel. Chickens are very resilient, but this girl needs a vet.

The older you get the softer you get too. Involve kids and give the chickens names and they become pets. Fair play to you though the comments I made above apply to me nowadays. $80 is worth it rather than having a heartbroken kid. We have a goose called Gordon that has damaged the ligaments in his shoulders so people passing by tell us his wings are broken. He's an old fart at 8 years old and like a dog he follows you around. He still tries to do a test flight every morning when we let him out. Sometimes you just do what you have to do. Giles UK

I must heartless. $80 is more than the cost of eggs for 6 mos. My family moved to a farm and the hardest lesson my son had to learn was the chickens, and goats, and sheep, and pigs, and cows, and LGDs are not pets. They are livestock. It is hard...very very hard at first, but as time goes on it gets a little easier. However, it never becomes easy for sure. We now do all our own vaccinations, and only very rarely does the farm vet ever need to stop by. Love following your channel. In the long run your journey will only strengthen your family.

I took 2 chickens to the vet, both times and hundreds of dollars later it didn't work out. One had a hurt leg and she died with a splint on her leg, the second one was somehow injured, it turned out she had been bitten on the abdomen and had to be put down because the peritonitis would be a painful end. Now we might bring them in the house so they can rest but wont go to vet.
@floot67998 жыл бұрын
SSL, you have to be practical. I have had commercial quantities of animals, doesn't mean you can't have pets too. Go by your conscience. If you need peace of mind, go to the vet, some animals are just worth it. For many years we raised animals for meat, eggs, manure and enjoyment. Raised with kindness, well cared for etc. Raise a happy flock of sheep, then find a few ripped apart by dingoes or wild dogs, truly awful, you feel like a failure. Or have a ewe or a pigeon die because you were inattentive is truly awful. We never count the cost of a vet when we need one, we don't run to the vet all the time but using one is not necessarily a virtue or a cop out. Nice video... good luck with the chooks... :)

So today my mum found a chicken 🐓 on the said of the road and we don’t know where she came from but my mum feed her and I was thinking about taking her back to our house but I know nothing about chicken and if I take her back do I need to take her to the vet or do I just take it home and keep her? Sorry for my English...

yes and I have taken 4 of mine to vet over the past year

Certainly you would take Bloody Mary to the vet. She is an integral part of your homestead, a special hen. We also have taken one of our hens to the vet, our best layer, luckily we didn't lose her. The eggs you receive from Mary are priceless when it comes to your families nutrition. Keep up the wonderful videos and the best to your family in the New Year. Michigan Out of Doors has shown videos hunting with veterans, they should be able to provide you with hunting advice, or contacts of groups to assist you. Wish we could be your neighbors. Yes take her to the vets, I've taken two of mine and spent hundreds of pounds.. And yes they are just chickens but it's mean to let them suffer.

poor Mary. I'm nursing 1 of our first birds for the 2nd time in 2 years. I agree no vets but certain birds have "value" to us and those do get preferential treatment. all others get to be dinner! Glad to hear she is going to be fine!

Good luck with Mary. The hard part is finding a vet that knows anything about chickens. Long story but at least my vet was willing to research and learn. I use tissue salts and homeopathy on my pets. No more chickens for me! Happy New Year!

Honestly I never take a chicken to the vet if I have to pay because I keep them for the dual purpose , so if a chicken has injured herself somehow I first try to do what I can and what I have available but if it is a desease no way , due the fact it often ends up in being a carrier of that and due the fact we need some for the meat and some the eggs , so usually we take the young ones to a vet if I can not fix it , the luck I have is no need to pay for anything besides XRays , and if the chicken is already older she ... sort of ends up in the soup ahum ... But I love your Bloody Mary too haha , I watched it all ! :D

Hey if you are willing to spend hundreds of dollars on a chicken you can buy for 20 or 30 then go for it. I think it depends if the animal is considered a pet or a farm animal the most.

OMG! The only reason I would be taking chickens to the vet is if 20 of them dropped dead and I wanted to know why. So for a necropsy! Now you must scold Mary for being so clumsy. hehehehe Oh well as they say, "A happy wife is a happy life". God Bless Joe

NO VET!!!! We use Vetrap or Coban and gently and loosely bind the leg to the body. The animal is kept inside away from the other chickens. After a few days they heal and after a bit more time they are ready to be re-introduced to the flock. 80 dollars is more than a chicken is worth, if they are a pet then you eat that money. Don't make PETS out of animals that are for food or food producers that defeats the purpose. I'm not trying to be mean it's just that a farm has a difficult time breaking even much less making money these days. If you call the vet or go to the vet every time one is having a problem you will go broke. We learned to tend to ours by ourself.
@MrBigrel238 жыл бұрын
Our vets won't see chickens. Plus they arent worth the fees imo
