Hello from Japan! Yes!! You hit the nail on the head when you explained the purpose of homesteading. We are in the process of getting our homestead in the US right now. I can't wait to start producing our own food 😍!

That's what a farm is for in my opinion. My grandpaw growed his own pigs and had a huge garden, of course he had 11 kids and they helped. He also milked cows and had a cooler and sold most of his milk to a milk company. I was 12 and he had me to go get the cows but I had a motorcycle, and he always told me not to run the cows down the hill because he was afraid one might break a leg so I slowly gathered them and brought them down to the milk house. I always had fun on his 200 acre farm.

It is so tough on me, I tried to convince him to go break her out from the processor! But we are so grateful for the food she will provide our family, and she had a much better life than most pigs do. We wouldn't trade this way of life for anything, but it's not easy :(

I think you're doing the right thing, if you have an aggressive hog, you get rid of the hog, not the entire herd. I hate to see big mama go but it is her time. That's the price we pay for being carnivores. Thanks for sharing your experiences with us, Jimmy

There's absolutely nothing more satisfying than a meal you raised yourself, for sure!! You're a brave man going in the pig pen with a stick after your last run in. I'd be looking for something with a little more bang behind it.

A fully rounded meal includes a grain serving such as cornbread. Small farms traditionally raised corn as it is necessary for the profitable raising of livestock.

My parents were amazing. Dad had a big clawfoot tub. He would build a fire under it and scald the hair off the pig. My Mom knew how to make everything from the pig including hogs head cheese, pickled pigs feeds, cured ham and bacon. We even ground and seasoned our own sausage. It was so delicious. I really miss the farm.

You don't need to totally quit raising/breeding pigs, just make their pens so you can care for them without having to go in the pen with them. I too survived a pig attack (though the pig that bit me was 600 pounds). It does change your attitude towards being in the pen with them that's for sure!

I have a prayer request. My 12 year old granddaughter is autistic. She is on some fairly aggressive meds to keep her self-abusive fits in check. Puberty is messing with those meds pretty badly. She came home from school today with hallucinations, a severe migraine, and tremors. She is at the hospital (once again) to have her meds reevaluated. She is currently in the ER waiting for a bed in the psych ward. If you and any of your viewers who are willing would put her on your prayer list I would greatly appreciate it. She needs all the prayer she can get. She IS saved if you are wondering, and her name is Lexi.

The moral choice to eat meat is made when you allow a domestic animal to breed. If you can answer the question "will the animals have a good life?" with a yes, it is a moral decision.

You need a different breed of pigs if they take that long to grow. Arent their pigs that grow to weight in 6- 9 months.
@SSLFamilyDad5 жыл бұрын
yeah but you have to feed them so much grain. I may try a more commercial breed but this breed eats a lot of pasture/hay so I can feed them minimal grains which produces a healthier product in the end.

was that sow not producing good? seems odd other wise to have her butchered only after 2 years, just when shes learned to be a good mom, young pigs normally end up killing all there piglets in there first litter, in fact my new one this year, she had her first litter in the night, so i was not there until the last 2, and like most all first time piglet moms they freak out not knowing whats going on and as each one comes out they spin around and around, and step on them, and the 2 that lived she really knew nothing an layed down on them just over a week old, but next time she will be a lot better.. so it just seems odd you got ride of your young sow, just as shes becoming a good mom. it takes one or 2 litters before they get it, and they are good for a number of years, pigs take a good 16 to 18 months to get them tto a live weight of 250 to 275, and they need a high proten feed, or they dont fill out and like wild pigs they would not get good meaty bellys for making bacon, you cany get any belly out of a wild pig as they dont get the high proteen needed to fill out the belly meat for bacon, you cant just feed on grass an root an bugs

That is our #1 concern, we will probably not keep the boars as long as we did George. It's unfortunate, but too much of a risk.
