I know its probably a little late for this advice, but maybe for other viewers. If one chicken is being a bully, remove the bully, not the bullied. Removing a hen from the flock for a couple of days will make her lose her status, as typically only higher ranking hens do the bullying. This will also give the bullied hens time to recover and build some confidence.

this seems to work good for me. I took out the bully and she still is a bit aggressive when I go in to feed her but the one being bullied seems to be doing MUCH better. I use to remove the one being bullied and that didn't work as good, as she got lonely and got worse.

A great way to help with this problem is at the first sign of picking to use tea tree oil. I mix olive oil and tee tree oil in a spray bottle. Then as soon as you see the picked chicken you liberally spray the area. It works two fold- one it heals and the other is it repells the others as they don't like the smell or taste. This only works if you see it right away and don't wait until they are as bad as your poor hen ended up. I know if they are hiding out it's hard to spot them. I love your channel. I just found it today while searching for raised beds from pallets.

Great video - I like your pen set up. It reminds me that I have to get our dog crate back from out son lol. Once our hen's began laying we had a hen that seemed to get picked on a bit - she is THE sweetest barred rock and was also the first to lay eggs. I decided to give them a bit of distraction by having things for them "to do". I hang a head of cabbage in their run periodically and have a flock block for them to play with. I also make sure I give table scraps in two separate bowls with Sherman's table scraps well away from the rest of the flock. We have opened one side of their pen to the garden area and my husband used the snow blower to clear areas for them to run and peck the ground. Our sweet barred rock stopped getting picked on! We'll keep a closer eye on them when their a bit older, however. (Their 9 months now). Keep up the good work! Blessings to you and your family! Joshua 1:8-9

SSLFamilyDad She's moulting. As the new feathers poke through their new shafts, a little blood comes through and the other chooks will pick at the red. First you want to isolate her if it's bad, 'til the bleeding stops. if the bleeding is bad, corn starch can be used as a makeshif Quick clot. just be sure once the bleeding stops to spray it with Vetrycin and clean the wound. Then hit the area with some Blue Kote. It's antisceptic, tastes bad and disguises the red to dissuade the hens from pecking. you also want to switch them to a feather fixer feed as soon as they start moulting to prevent bald spots. just remember to expect a fall off in egg production during the moulting season.

@@doriewoodward7608If she’s healthy, remove the bully. I only had to quarantine the bully for half a day, & she had a new attitude. It was recommended to quarantine for a couple of days. Guess it depends upon how big of a flock & how aggressive. Had one that had long lasting seizures & was at the bottom of the pecking order, but after a month being caged next to the run & with a special diet & added supplements, she longed to be with the others, & had her last seizure 2 minutes after reuniting them. That was 10 months ago, she’s the sweetest, but will get aggressive over bananas.

My wife and I have 10 chickens and we're experiencing the very same thing with two of our chickens. There's about a 3" patch of missing feathers and raw skin on each chicken, but not bloody. One of my Barred Rock girls are picking on my Easter egger girls. Nobody else just that breed. I tried separating her from the flock to knock her down the pecking order but after being reintroduced 2 days later she was at it again. I even got a rooster to try and help deter her but he's no help lol. We are building a personal A frame coop and run for the barred rocks to live in. I had two last year worse than that. I separated them as you then I thought why am I doing this because she will go through this again when I re introduce her. I put tar on her wounds to get them dried up (its for chickens) Once they were dried I made chicken aprons for them covering the areas they were getting to on both the chickens. Once they see blood they don't stop, its then a source of food and its shiny so they peck at it. The chicken aprons did the trick, it protected the chickens and now they are my best egg layers getting along fine. I don;t know where in the pecking order they are, but those two are always the first one's in the coup in the evening

+SSLFamilyDad I believe they are called saddles. I can mail you one if you would like. They are also used for over bearing roosters, it protects thee poor hens from those spurs. The other thing I saw but did not do is chicken blinders lol, yes they look like glasses and clip on by the nose holes by the beak, when I looked into it it said it pierce the part so it sticks and I don't know I couldn't do it. I guess they work they sell them.

to stop a bleeding feather, pull the feather out by the root. it will stop the bleeding immediately and the feather will regrow. I used to raise exotic birds and had to deal with blood feathers occasionally. hope this helps with your sweet girl.

Separating them away from the flock is the worst thing you could possibly do. You should leave the dog kennel in the run during the day and coop at night, when it comes down to releasing her back with them it’ll be much smoother than taking two weeks on integration, which is especially hard with just one chicken. They usually bully each other for a reason, boredom, lack of space and roosting room, the hen is ill or they’re not getting the right feed, or you have a weird looking breed, in that case, you should have another small flock for that breed or get rid, Ive found breed specific bullying is very rare however.

+ThingsBy Tina try to massage the underside of the chickens neck. Make sure it is comfortable and has plenty of water. Not much else you can do. Also, make sure you separate it as the other chickens may start to pick on it

Pick-No-More Lotion has worked well with my chicks. You liberally cover the wound with it and when the other chickens peck it they get some of the solution on their beaks. Don't know what's in it but they Do Not like it. They start wiping their beaks and pecking, for the most part, stops. Lotion also helps the wound heal.

My experience has been that even after separating until complete healing has taken place, they'll still pick on her. I have had some people tell me that this is caused by overcrowding, but that's simply not true. This starts out as a contest for pecking order between two hens and continues until the whole flock turns against the loser. I have put a hen back with the flock after a couple months and it took less than a day to know it wouldn't work. Just placing new chickens--much less one with a rap sheet--in the flock can be a nightmare of watching. There are a couple videos on YT that show success by changing their entire pen/house furniture...creating a space wherein every chicken is new at once... This works according to my very limited experience. Also, I do have a pen that has 13 chickens including a rooster, and I have never seen the problem with them. There are some short tails on some of the hens, but I have witnessed the cause in that issue...his name is rooster! Once I gain a bit more space this problem will likely cure itself. Want to see your chickens forget their problems? Use safety wire to wire a couple heads of cabbage to the inside of the pen so that they hang at pecking height. I am pretty sure that between a couple of cabbages and roughly 10 apples over a week took egg production in the pen mentioned above from ~4/day to ~10/day with a couple of 12-egg days! 100% production! I love it, and judging by the sounds the chickens were making with those diced apples, they were quite happy. SSLF Dad, my experience has been that when we get a picked-on hen, we keep her separate until a new pen--or a reworking of an old pen--comes about and then they seem to do okay. The rooster worked for me and we ended up hatching replacements to boot.

I was going to try removing the dominant chicken or top two of them from the flock when I put the little one back in. then reintroduce the bigger ones after about a week. The idea is that I can disrupt the pecking order a bit for long enough to reintroduce. I will video the process and see how well it works. As far as the cabbage and apples go, that is a great idea also. I gave ours some cabbage this summer and they loved it!

I just had to put one down today. Hens can be so brutal. They pecked her head to the bone. Strange but only certain chickens keep ending up on the bottom. Buff Orpington and Americanas. Can only have them with each other. Leghorns and barred rocks seem to be the worst. Feel bad since I wasn't there to stop it.

Thank you very much for this video! Though we eat chickens, they all are living creatures to that deserve respect up until the time they are slaughtered and eaten. I just got back from a friends house and they got to talking about the pecking of chickens that are ill. I mentioned that they are living creatures and they should not peck at ill chicken. They just said the chickens need culled so no chickens end up starving and that its natures way and Gods way. I argued against what they said and they just said oh thats the way it is. Of course my one friend here is being controlled and swayed by a so called boyfriend who claims to be religious while being very ignorant and rude with her company at same time and him not liking animals either. she loves animals he does not. As far as slaughtering of chickens to be eaten, it should be done humanely and as long as all chickens live, they should all be treated with respect and if a chicken gets ill and picked on, then chicken gets nursed back to health as opposed to being picked on and pecked at. Thanks again for sharing of this video and I loved it! Especially after these friends saying these mean and nasty things about ill chickens excusing the picking and pecking.

What I have done in this situation is when the others start to pick on her make up a hot mustard paste and a lil chilli pepper and smear on birds feather where it’s being pecked at and the other so learn not to pick (peck) at her again

I just found this video and I am currently in exactly the same situation as you and with the exact same type of bird - Buff Orpington (I think that is what yours is, too). I brought mine in the house and I have a rabbit cage, mine is in the kitchen and I clean her pen everyday, it is the same as a litter box. I tried to reintroduce her after she had healed but the other 3 hens were just on her the moment I put her in with them, all of them pecking her at once. It was quite shocking. She free ranges during the day so she was 'with' the other birds everyday but there was a fence between them so it wasn't like she was unknown to the other birds. So...I have a pet chicken - her name is Poppy :)

weak... I usually heal them - feed them - then put blade speirs on one of their foot and reintroduce them to their old flock and they rebalance the pecking order!!!

Why am i watching this... My picked on chicken was hurt badly WE put her with the other chicken who acted as a friend to her (They aren't related at all) Our picked in chicken was a Ecaspe artist (Sorry for my spelling) and she died of a dog biting her neck.... R.I.P Escapelila

You said she was in there for a few days like that why didn't you take her out immediately after you saw they were picking at her she wouldn't be in such a bad shape if you had you waited sorry to be so real about it I really love my chickens and I hopefully wouldn't leave them in as long as you did again I'm sorry just being real

Chicken society is a savage society. You cannot change that. You cannot stop bullying. You can take away their weapons. Which will reduce/eliminate damage. Trim their beaks. Remove the sharp tip from the upper beak. About 2 millimeters or 1/16th in. They can still eat and forage for food. It doesn't hurt the bird either no different than trimming toe nails. This it how hatcheries deal with this problem.

+gamarran ma I was surprised at how nasty they were with each other also, hopefully the last new one you have will get integrated ok. I have also clipped the beaks of the meanest ones which helps prevent so much damage when they do peck. Good luck!

+SSLFamilyDad the ones which attacked and killed the hen had full beaks because I had purposely chosen them thinking that full beak is an im ortant sensory organ. I didn't think it could be so deadly for the others...lesson learned. thanks

Don't agree with separating a chicken out, alone, with only human interaction; you are just turning her into your pet, not part of the flock and it will be unlikely she can ever rejoin that flock. The other birds are culling her out for a reason, likely one that you are not aware of. Nature has spoken; use the bird in a pot of soup unless you just want a lonely chicken for a pet.

You best learn fast chickens will keep pecking tasting blood they will kill her then start pecking another one until they are all dead. Put Blue spray on this wounded spot its medicine that taste bad if other chicken peak it . Plus chickens have a peaking order what I do is take the boss nasty hen out for 2 weeks then put her bad and she has lost her boss job to a lower rank . You can do this as other become to bossy and know it all's . In general chickens are mean to each other.
