When God created the world, He placed mankind at the pinnacle of that creation. Yet through our first parents, Adam and Eve, original sin came into the world and was passed down through the human race. War, disease, deprivation, and death itself resulted. Yet Our Lord in His infinite mercy and love raised up good out of evil by exempting His mother from this stain and thus prepared the way for His coming.

I do not think it should said, as it was initially in this fine sermon, that Adam was created out of the '"slime" of the Earth. I heard a sermon yesterday, the feast of the Immaculate Conception, saying that Adam was created out of the *good* Earth. I can't cite that sermon (I am still looking for it!) but I can cite St. Irenaeus. Saint Irenaeus makes a parallel between the virginity of the sweet earth from which Adam was drawn to the virginity of Mary from which Jesus, the Second Adam, was drawn. ‘And as the protoplast himself, Adam, had his substance from untilled and as yet virgin soil (for God had not yet sent rain, and man had not tilled the ground (Genesis 2:5) so did He who is the Word, recapitulating Adam in Himself, rightly receive a birth, enabling Him to gather up Adam [into Himself], from Mary, who was as yet a virgin’ (Adversus hereses III, 21:10). It is a very small point, but I thought it might be helpful.
