Curious what yo mean by needing more Christianity? More ceremony/ritual or something else? Is it uncommon nowadays for people in a congregation to not know one another? Don't know your background, but I can imagine this being a symptom of megachurches. Maybe also a symptom of the disappearance of neighborhood churches where people already knew one another.

Oh I love this. I want to visit a Quaker church now. Silence is my favorite thing....always searching for silence in my busy life. I am devoted to my church, but if I had a Quaker church nearby, I would often visit. Thanks for the information. ; )

Wow. You have done so much to increase cultural literacy and religious awareness in our society. I learn every week. Thank you.

The service reminds me of the Catholic practice of adoring Jesus in the Eucharist. Most Adoration Chapel time is dedicated to silent prayer. I've learned a lot about being present to God and dealing with distractions, from the saints who practiced contemplative prayer in Adoration.
@davidcoates6201 Жыл бұрын
It's fascinating to me how a lot of religious practices seem to map onto one another if you look closely enough. Yes, I can see how Eucharistic Adoration is similar to the silence in a Quaker Meeting. Heck, many monastic practices are just doing that all the time.

I've heard Quakers are some of the most accepting and inclusive congregations. I didn't know about the silent meeting. In LDS temples we experience something like this in celestial rooms.

I did sort of a going away tour of like 10 churches before I decided to fully label myself as an athiest. I can't imagine doing 52! This one looks cool, kind of like a quiet Unitarian Universalist vibe? I went to an LDS service a couple weeks ago here in Northern MN, just to see what religion looked like to my athiest eyes after 10 years - it was nothing like my evangelical upbringing but the people were surprisingly very welcoming. I think that community fellowship vibe is what I miss most from religion. I'm loving your videos! I hope they take off!

Good luck in your journey. The LDS are usually very welcoming and they like visitors. If nothing else, you should keep going for the Spence of community.

Interesting! I'm not sure I would be comfortable in the silence. I have noticed that some of my ancestors were Quakers in RI so maybe I should visit a meeting house. If they don't really preach about their beliefs how do people come to know what they believe?

@@52churchesin52weeks There's a lot. What's interesting to me is that there's no easy way to map who is going to be friendly to you and who is going to be standoffish. I know that you experienced this when writing your book. I've never gotten a bad response from Quakers, and I went through exactly what you did. I've never gotten a bad response from Mormons, and they're happy to drive me to their church services. Some other denominations seem standoffish or hostile to people who are just curious. The Quakers just aren't like that.

I am a member of a programmed Quaker meeting (we have music and preaching but also silence). It takes practice to really center into the quiet and feel the tangible presence of the Spirit. It is collective listening, not really individual meditation or prayer.
@thePULSE87 Жыл бұрын
It’s so interesting to see how Many others conduct themselves in their individual gatherings.. obviously the ‘Christian’ reality is missing, but I can appreciate simply being still, even silent in His presence and moments of reflection and listening are crucial

I was introduced to the Friends religion in the movie the "angel and the badman" with John Wayne. Since it was filmed in Utah I kinda had a thread to them and always was happy to greet them. Although they are a closed society, I do enjoy their company just on my part. Completely different than sacrament meeting with 10,000 kids huh?
@52churchesin52weeks Жыл бұрын
Quite different indeed. There were about a dozen kids or so and I heard a few come into the muted meeting. Never spoke other than to whisper to mom and dad, they remained quiet and eventually went to a separate youngsters room. Can't speak for all, but seems like it would be tough for anyone under 13 years old to remain still during the entire duration.

Thank you for sharing this! Very neat. You might want to try a Catholic Church that has Eucharistic Adoration and Benediction. Traditionally Eucharistic Adoration is an unscripted experience of silence and peace, although some churches do it with praise music or readings. The services that have Benedicition ad a part of them include a special blessing and usually insence.

I'm so happy that you went to a Quaker Church! Its very interesting to see how silent their services are. I do kind of like that feeling to have a sense of meditation to God. But I prefer having songs during the service for joyful and positive reasons .
@52churchesin52weeks Жыл бұрын
Hey Nick, hope you're doing well. I hear ya, the sole focus on prayer/meditation is certainly enhanced. Hard to abandon worship songs all together.

The silence is beautiful. I understand the sshhhh factor of being completely quiet as a Latter-day Saint Mormon during the sacrament partaking. Have you tried worshipping with Seventh-day Adventists?

Have you found a programmed Quaker Friends Church that is led by a pastor? The one you visited in this video is an unprogrammed Friends Meeting. There are several branches of Quakerism.
@monus7828 ай бұрын
I’ve gone to a few meetings in my area and they’re pretty much tiny and dying out (the local Quakers were renting from a Presbyterian church) which is a shame, I may not agree with the strict pacifism but I respect them for many other things and I got much out of the silent prayer sessions. I also like their theology of the Inner Light and I sometimes read from their publications.

Wow David, you literally went from the loudest church in the entire world to the quietest. Without being critical, that is not usually your style and rightly so, could you comment on your simply experiencing such a stark contrast one week apart? After watching this, I had to go research Quakers to see what I could learn. If I got it right, I believe you are at a minority group that focuses solely on that divine light in us. There are other Quaker groups that are more like your typical Christians (like Evangelicals, some liberal groups, some conservative). The way I see it, these guys are half right. They know there is a divine light inside; many Christian theologies not only overlook this, they deny it. These Quakers are right; there is a divine light inside, and it is wonderful. But there is the other half; Jesus teaches us how to grow and develop that light, what to do with or about it. Very awesome, my friend. Thank you very , very much.

@52churchesin52weeks Жыл бұрын
Hey Chelsie, thanks for watching. So there were about ten children... but they didn't participate in the meeting. Some kids briefly walked with their parents (those who did maintained silence), but they had their own thing in a different room. At the conclusion when everyone held hands around the room, that's when all the kids joined in.
