+majenta collis He just continually evokes Tolkien's name, then compares himself to him(going so far as to literally adding an initial in his name in imitation), then minimizes and dogs out those works. Really.. If Tolkien's and others works are 'just a bunch of good guys' coming together to fight evil' aka no complexity, etc, if that's really your takeaway, then just stop writing right now; you need to re-read the entire genre you are supposedly 'transcending'. And quit posing off of, then proceeding to dog-out the predecessors that made YOU possible, since you can't seem to do it on your own. Get your own schtick, and stop riding on the coat-tails, then dogging out ppl who did it better than you, before you.
@Goldhelmriel9 жыл бұрын
+Goldhelmriel ^ my apologies i accidentally replied to your message instead of posting a thread of my own. Your response is very right on for GRM comments about his own works. At least he's actually talking about them in their own right, instead of pretending.
@alcaeus28 жыл бұрын
+Goldhelmriel I certainly agree with you. Simplifying Tolkien's world to the point of "good versus evil" is nothing more than an insult to the huge diversity of morals and characteristics that portray each hero/race. In Silmarillion there are a lot of elf nobles or kings whose character is questionable at the very least, or their choices don't resemble those of a "purely good" being. Similarly, in lotr there are races and characters who are neutral, or side with the "evil" forces without being "evil" themselves, or fight between themselves for power and wealth. How would you classify gollum's role for example? So, even if you focus exclusively on the nature of Tolkien's heroes, you can't diminish all of them to "good and bad", adopting a black and white perspective. Now, also keep in mind, that Tolkien's world is a much larger universe under constant change as it evolves through time, so focusing on every house's or race's political intrigues with so much detail would be simply impossible and hugely time consuming to the point of boredom. That however doesn't mean there isn't any political intrigues at all. Just look at the relations of each kingdom or race in lotr. Ever wondered how did they come to that? I don't know. I respect Tolkien's world just for the amount of detail particularly regarding his language research. I love it for how he portrayed his work in a fascinating and astonishing way that keeps one interested, despite the depth of lore, mythology and detail behind it. And he didn't do it for a living, neither did he ever intend or actually see his works being portrayed through media. And that's one of the reasons his world doesn't need so much sex and over the top erotic scenes to draw public's attention. He didn't seek public attention. Now, instead of giving him the credits for the establishment of what was considered an "unknown childish story telling" as a whole new genre of fictional fantasy world, his work is being diminished to a "good versus evil" story and labeled as a "childish tale" because of that aspect. I'm sorry, but no child can fully appreciate the folklore of Tolkien's world, neither admire to the full extent the brilliance of his academic language creation/mixture. In other words, Goldhelmriel is bloody right!
@rasmussrensen33807 жыл бұрын
I know its a long time since you wrote this but i'll comment anyway. 1. Tolkiens world is alot more "Good vs evil" than game of thrones is. 2. Tolkiens world might be huge, but so its GRRM's world and timeline! I mean, how much do you hear about the first men, the andals, the giants, the children of the forest, the long night, the conquest and all of the targaryen kings, the doom of valyria and the many dragonlords, the breaking and i could go on and on! We never hear much about the third continent or Sothoryos or the Yi Ti empire which existed a long time to the east but all of this is still written history! I havn't even mentioned half of the history here. If i will i can also find the official family tree of the targaryens going all the way back to the conquest 300 years before the story takes place. I can find the tree of the starks and lannisters aswell. I find this very interesting as we only follow this storyline over 5 years or so. 3. GRRM did himself mention that he is bad with languages and therefor for most of the time just wrote "He said in dothraki" or something like that but still for the sake of the HBO series they hired the LCS to make the many languages like Dothraki, High Valyrian and Astapori Valyrian out of what they could get from the words in the book and there is still other languages planned for the future. 4. You gotta understand that it isn't the "sex and over the top erotic scenes" that attracts the many game of thrones fans but rather the many storylines, the depth of them and much more.

***** I find his questions (somewhat) interesting. You can only ask the same questions so many times before it gets tiresome, and his weren't bad. Considering this took place just after season 2 (I think, could be wrong), there is also only so many questions that can be asked. I also don't find him as irritating as many of the other moderators I've seen in the Comicon clips. GRRM is by far the best moderator so far, but he only did it once. It's a panel--no one ever talks "freely" unless they hog all the airtime (that's why you need a moderator). And given how tight-lipped they all have to be about future development of the show (especially when there are always idiot audience members who ask such questions even when they have been pre-told not to ask such questions), they can never "talk freely." So yes, "really."

I mean his battle plans and his actions before breaking his word with the freys were amazing. The way he tricked Tywin and captured Jamie. Sure, he made mistakes but other people also screwed him another. Him sending Theon away, Catelyn releasing the Kingslayer, Edmure attacking the Lannister Army at Riverun. Sending Theon away caused him to lost Winterfell and as far inland as Moat Catlin. Bran and Rickon as well. He believes them to be dead so he lost both of his possible heirs. Catelyn lost their most valuable host and away they would have to been away to sue for peace. Edmure attacking the Lannister host caused them to lose an advantageous position and they weren't able to take out the mountain. Robb marrying a camp follower screwed him over with the Freys. I just love the way the world is written and even if someone fixed one thing. Someone already did something else to make the ending events the same. Imagine if Edmure listened to Robb and they killed the mountain as well as destroyed another Lannister Host. Oberyn wouldn't have had to fight the mountain and Tyrion might have won his freedom. If Theon wasn't sent to his father. The Greyjoy would still call a rebellion though they wouldn't be as bold to attack Winterfell as it's too far inland and Bran and Rickon would have been safe in the walls. And Robb would still have his heirs safe and secure. The Freys would have been reminded of the power and strength of the North and might have backed out of the red wedding and even if they didnt. Bran could have still continued the war with those loyal to the Starks. Arya could have went to the twins and she would have been safe and probably sent back to Winterfell by her mother and Robb. He would have learned that Ceresi lied and any leverage they would have over that gone. The possibilities are endless and it always keeps me thinking what if

One thing that Martin does better than Tolkien is female characters.I think Tolkien himself would admit that. I am pleased with Peter Jackson's efforts to remedy that in the LOTR films.
@abdullahihashi38499 жыл бұрын
Valkyrie Sardo Tolkien would obviously admit that, but the two authors are complete opposites in writing styles, and Tolkien's time was one where women weren't as equal as men, thus giving the power to men in those books. Whereas Martin sets it during a time where women don't get it easy as men but can still have their own sense of strength with haracters like Catelyn and Cersei. Tolkien's skill in writing didn't come from the characters, but the world itself. The language was fleshed out the maps were fleshed out it was all believeable, thats what other fantasy authors try to capture when creating fictional worlds with so much detail that you can actually be immersed in it.
@jayyy6759 жыл бұрын
fuaudiha ajksdajwe I agree with that entirely. Although I believe women are in the same, sexist situations in both books, however with Tolkien the women aren't particularly successful despite the situations, whereas in Game of Thrones women, with difficulty, are able to gain power. RR Martin showcasing many female characters obviously helps with this. This by no means means Tolkien was sexist though - it's likely he just wanted a story about men, or he knew it was unrealistic for women to have this positions in society. Furthermore, due to the 'age' he was in, a book with a female, successful lead, may not have been as successful because readers would have seen it as stupid for a female to have power - perhaps it was entirely a money-based decision. And while I praise Tolkien's way with words, I also have to say that RR Martin's dialogue is absolutely incredible. The way they speak is beautiful.
@Dave_ja_vu5 жыл бұрын
Yep, but also have to take into account the social climates at the time of both's writings. They would've impacted those things somewhat I feel

after watching the entire show twice, Alfie Allen & Lena Headey are the 2 greatest actors in this show. Alfie's performance is actually earth-shattering and I'm left in awe after some scenes (particularly when he has succumbed to Stockholm syndrome and acts fearful of Ramsay Bolton). they arent my favorite characters in the show; mind you, but the acting was just incredible. I mention Lena Headey because I don't think any actor/actress is so different from their character as Headey is from hers. she's so kind and funny in real life and to on a dime be able to transform your whole mood and face into something so stern & malevolent is again amazing.
