did actually see this tour when it came through palo alto, well, the minutemen stopped me on El Camino Real in their white van to ask for directions to the club (cuz I was wearing a Captain Beefheart T-shirt), that's why I went

"The Blasting Concept" changed my life back in 1984. I bought it new for $1 at my local small town (Temple, TX) record store. I asked the guy why it was only a dollar and he said, "It's a sampler. We don't sell that kind of crap here."

Wow. This is my all-time favorite show. I caught it in San Diego AND in L.A. Best concert I've ever been too and I don't expect I'll ever top it. Minutemen, Meat Puppets and Hüskers were my favorite bands, and all on one bill?? Jesus. They are still some of my favorite bands. And Henry Rollins looked like a madman. I was just SLIGHTLY disappointed that Black Flag didn't play, but whatever.

+Matthew T. Grant I think it was the night after, but typing that only serves to make me look like the goofy nerd that I am. But more to the point, I agree. The night before was the same. Husker Du were good, but overblown guitar-sound wise. And after the Meat Puppets/Minutemen/S.T., it was kinda hard to stay interested. So, at the first show - the Stone - I stayed all the way through. At Palo Alto, I also left during Husker Du. And Land Speed Record wasn't produced by the Minutemen. It was simply released on their label, New Alliance.

SWA was the worst bullshit band ever. Steve Albini once wrote that "the most pathetic things a person can do is listen to SWA or be SWA".
@silversnail1413 Жыл бұрын
Steve Albini hated almost every band. He even insulted the Pixies after they did their first album with him then had to walk back his comments years later. And let's not forget that he produced Bush albums too. I don't listen to his opinions on anything anymore. Big Black is incredibly overrated too. Everything they ever did musically was done better by bands like Swans and Godflesh and their lyrics are the kind of garbage an edgy thirteen year old would write.

Meat Puppets? Thats not a set. Thats a Joke. They can barely be bothered to sing, half assed covers. They must have been pissed off or making a concept statement.

+flash bazbo no, they were absolutely amazing and you can see them win over the crowd, it's obvious they go from confused, to amazed to thrilled.

+flash bazbo i saw them open for John Cale in Miami when the Dead Milkmen canceled. IT was the first time i had heard of the Meat Puppets, they slayed. They conquered. John Cale was too drunk to play but the Meat Puppets and the Pscyho Daisies were soooooo good it made up for it.
@TheBonnieFranklin9 жыл бұрын
+flash bazbo Funny. For a few decades running, this particular Meat Puppet set was the best example of an overcrowded club audience completely falling in line with the mayhem onstage. As well as attending this show (Ooh, look at me! Look at me!), I saw the Meat Puppets easily 15 times in the four years surrounding this one. They were not "pissed," and if there's a statement being made, it's not one they didn't make on a regular basis.
@goodboysic8 жыл бұрын
+Jay Kahl and TheBonnieFranklin I agree completely. I saw them on the "up on the Sun" tour in Manhattan on the 3rd floor of a club called "The World". I wasn't tripping,(having given that up years ago), but a few times during their performance, the music seemed to induce hallucinations by its composition and how brilliantly it was being played. At the end of Hot Pink the room seemed to melt and then elevate somehow...it was truly amazing. A cover of Led Zeppelin's "Rock and Roll" as one of the encores was unlike any I had ever heard and the entire crowd was in tune, enthralled and at rapt attention during the entire show. Not an easy thing to pull off in a NYC night club. After that experience, I always made it a point to see these boys whenever they were in town. They never disappointed.
@elmoblatch97875 жыл бұрын
At 28:30 you have to admit that a band could not sound worse than the Meat Puppets. Their set is unwaveringly sloppy, devoid of energy, self indulgent, and outright pathetic. Their recorded catalog is fine, but jesus fucking christ they are piss poor live...just awful.
