Beverley born and bred, Joseph Wilson worked in Hull as a detective constable with British Transport Police and served with distinguished service in the Green Howards. Joseph enjoyed nothing better than filming family events, his holidays at home and abroad plus capturing his home town and place of work. He used to shoot in colour film which was much more expensive than the commonly used monochrome. His films now stand as documents of life in a different time and grow more important with each passing year. Enjoy!

Remember those times. Many of them jumping on as a kid going through locks with my dad or brother. I can still smell the forcastal dell the smell of tea and oilskines

Hi Graham, thanks for your memories. My dad, who you see in the film, has told me how he used to go to the dock in the 1930s to watch his Uncle, who was a skipper, come in and he used to beckon my dad to jump aboard and travel through the locks too.

My Darling Mary (we have beentogether over 50 years; Children and Grandchildren!) was born on 16 February 1948 at Cottingham Hospital. We met just outside of Pearson Park, Autumn 1971. Thanks Jon for taking the time to comment. You are so right, it is so very sad that the dock has been allowed to fall into its current state. There have been many years and many plans put forward to utilise that space but virtually nothing has happened to respect Hull's fishing heritage. The few buildings, even now, could be turned into museums/riverside living. Anything to keep what is the pale skeleton of what was once a bustling, thriving place of employment for so many.

@@josephwilson-hiswonderfulw3865 Yep, I live locally now but grew up in Wales near Swansea and the docks there have been rescued, renovated and made into a water front that is really really nice. Even though it’s no longer a working docks (you know what I mean) it’s a nice place to go, walk, eat, spend time. There are sailing boats and small craft moored up. It’s active. They also have museums there in the old buildings, all free of charge.

Sounds like they have done a good job with Swansea. Hull CC definetely need to take a few leaves out of their book. Anything to make the place vibrant again. As it's right next to the main road into the city what a place it could be to welcome visitors. To have small craft etc using the basin would be a dream!

Maybe so. There's been too much talk of regeneration of the dock these past 40 years and not a scrap of action.

What a sad creepy and haunted place st Andrews Dock is, the spirits that remain there are not at rest ,I know that for a fact after my paranormal experience, and I have always been an open minded person aswell. 🙏❤️🇬🇧❤️🙏 Nov twenty two

@@josephwilson-hiswonderfulw3865 I am still a hull resident. to this day and have shared my experience with others, one person in question who I still see has said to me I must gifted in some way to have this happen. Let me tell you it was life changing, I went there a few years ago now to lay flowers down on the bull nose where people do,I spent a time just looking around the place,even then it felt so oppressive. I walked away from where I laid the flowers by then I stood outside the Lord line building. Because of the saddnes that I felt I turned back at the bull nose where I laid the flowers and started calling out the names of the ships that never returned and some of the names that I recognised from the plaque on the bull nose and some that I had read about just out of respect. I simply said something like how sorry I was you never never came back. At that point I just froze for no reason and started feeling a coughing and choking sensation almost like I was drowning. By then my whole body literally froze and all i could see stood near the bull nose wa numerous men dressed in black almost like the fishermen who left on the ships..after a while I left shaking feeling very pale. I went for a pint in rayners pub,I remember telling somebody about what had happened but I cannot remember what they said, I was too shook up at the time. I swear to this very day something or someone followed me home after my experience on st Andrews Dock. Now I could be wrong but I felt a strong presence in my flat like never before. On one occasion one of my cupboards in the kitchen opened by itself and most of the tinned stuff fell out, also next to my bed is a dial to turn my heating on. There is no way on this earth the heating could be turned on unless it was done so by somebody. I always remember that day because it was a Sunday morning I was still in bed and I noticed there was a musty smell. It was only when I fully woke up I noticed the heating on. I have got used to a presence in my flat for a long while now and I'm pretty sure it knows that I know of its presence. As I said I am a very open minded person and do strongly believe something or someone followed me home. The whole thing to was certainly life changing. I guess that's why I love the old footage of st Andrews Dock. So many souls left there and never returned. 🙏❤️🇬🇧❤️🙏

You are correct. The two ladies were not related to the trawlermen but were the wife and daughter of the cameraman, Joseph Wilson.
