I think the riffs on St. Anger are allright - the problem is that they are being stretched out over like 70 minutes on the album or 6-8 Minuts per song. If each song (maybe except a few) was around 3-4 minutes the album could have been dope, you know, like Divine Intervention by Slayer.^^

@@BigMuff75 that's how I feel about all of Metallica's albums since Load to be honest, increasingly so with the more recent stuff. It's like the more music they write, the harder it is to sit through it all. After thoroughly enjoying Megadeth's new record front to back and on repeat for a few days, I forced myself to listen to 72 Seasons in its entirety during a long drive... And emphasis on "force," as it really was a struggle to not take a break and go back to it. And I really can't place my finger on exactly what it is, because this is coming from someone who also loves Sleep's "Dopesmoker" and has jammed to that in a single sitting too and been hype the whole time. Idk what it is about Metallica, but I just lose my interest with them so fast after a bit of listening to anything that came out after the black album, even though plenty of some of my favorite of the bands' songs do come from those albums, (like Ain't My Bitch is a fucking JAM!)

Exactly. And the biggest problem with St. Anger isn't even the main riffs; it's the verses. The verses on every single song on that album are just drudgingly boring. Almost without fail you get hyped by the intro and the main riff, and then the verse comes in and all of the momentum is lost.

I don't care what others say. I really, really like Super Collider. It isn't "radio rock", or "simple metal." You can't even call it exactly commercial, because Dave's voice, the guitar flourishes and tone keep it much more in the realm of aficionados than mainstream accessibility. Yes, Dave was trying to balance the music in a more accessible, "Countdown" style direction, because of the new contract with UMG. But I don't think he really succeeded in that. The metal was too strong in him. And for those that still don't like the album, Kingmaker is a stone cold classic and better than many songs on MD's classic albums. And then several others are just excellent metal songs.
