St Benet’s Abbey is 1,000 years old and has been abandoned since 1545. Folklore tells of a dragon residing underground at the abbey. In 1782 the story began in the nearby village of Ludham. A huge dragon type creature reputedly appeared at night shocking residents. The giant reptilian was said to have taken residence under St Benet’s Abbey gatehouse after the terrified residents of Ludham blocked its lair so it was unable to return to its nest. The dragon bellowed in anger before flying south towards St Benet’s ruined gatehouse. Circling for some time the dragon plunged for the archway and after much commotion made it inside, burrowing its way into the underground vaults beneath. The fearsome dragon was never seen again. Does he still rest below the ruined gatehouse? Or perhaps he lays in wait to rise once more? Reptilian creatures regularly shed their skins and a local farmer many years ago claimed to have ownership of the dragon skin. If true the whereabouts of this dragon skin is now unknown. When Henry VIII split from the Catholic Church in 1533 St Benet’s was the only monastery not to be officially dissolved. Although soon after the buildings swiftly vanished including the church. The skeletal remains of the church walls create a pathway which leads to where the high altar originally was, which is now marked by a large wooden cross donated from Sandringham Estate and made of English oak. A monk called Pacificus supposedly haunts this site. Upon returning to the monastery after Henry VIII’s men visited, Pacificus discovered much to his despair his friends had disappeared. His spirit has been seen rowing the river with his dog. Is Pacificus still searching for his long lost brothers? The old gatehouse is the only surviving building of the original abbey and is reputedly haunted by a so called ‘shrieking monk’. ‘Essric’ allowed Norman invaders into the monastery, on the agreement with them he were to be made abbot. Upon entry the Normans’ did pronounce Essric abbot however then promptly hung the monk for treachery. Skinned alive and nailed to the arch his cries ring out and his ghost is seen hanging at the gatehouse entrance.
