The saints are our mentors and models who show us ways to live our faith. However, some of their stories can be terrifying and downright...spooky. Fr. Steven Bell, CSP, presents one of these spookier saintly stories as he tells the tale of Saint Christina the Astonishing ---- a woman that some called mad, and some called holy.

I love Saint Christina the Astonishing. She is patron saint of those with mental illness and I suffer from mental illness. I have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder, Major Depression, and Dysthymia which is another term for mild depression. I don't fully understand why I have both Major Depression and Dysthymia but all well. Saint Christina the Astonishing's prayers have helped me out many times.

Maybe your soul came to learn how to calm down your mind, soul, and heart when the torment comes. When you start to feel negativity, you welcome it, accept it, forgive yourself, ask Jesus and God for help and you just breathe and watch something pretty like a fairytale or a comedy and wait until the storm goes away. You could be also deficient in vitamins. Bad digestion and lack of good gut bacteria is linked to depression, because the gut is connected to the brain. Stop eating sugar, caffeine, coffee, tea, everything that damages good bacteria and hurts digestion. Take B complex, liposomal vitamin c, and ubiquinol for healthy mitochondria. I am sure your depression will be less frequent.

Saints are truly admirable, adorable and authentic people. A certain Christian writer said, 'they are just ordinary folks who chose GOD's LOVE above all others." Here St. Christina perfectly exemplified the great virtue of humility, selflessness by denying herself and patience and trust by fully embracing God's Will because rather than choosing Heaven, she chose to return to earth even if it means living on earth in agony, pain, sorrow and suffering. She did it out of pure love and generosity to save many tormented souls in purgatory and Hades after seeing them in eternal retribution.

Poor woman. I've never heard of her. She sounds like a very sick and tormented person, whose only desire was to do good to others. May she rest in peace.

I like the fact that she is still venerated in Belgium and is know as St. Christina Mirabilis. Also another saint to pray for those who are mentally ill. And for those who suffer from mental illness and the caregivers as well.

I really love being named after her. Sometimes I think of becoming a psychiatrist or psychologist to help others who need it.

She was completely crazy and her story is unbelievable. People of the Middle Ages were superstitious and believed in magic.

Human nature does not change. One cannot just dismiss every witness of an event, especially of some of the witnesses were of good standing. In our modern times, when people have abandoned the Christian faith for the most part, people have returned to actual superstition. On every block there are signs for psychic readings and other such nonsense. Superstition is a belief and an action and not witnessing an event. And a belief in something in of itself does not meet the definition of superstition.

She should have chosen God!

Both choices were God. One choice was to be with Him immediately while the other was to suffer out of charity for others to be with God later. If either choice was wrong, God would not have presented them both as good choices. If you die and are given that choice then make your own choice. But we cannot bash someone else for their choice. Considering that she is a Saint, I think she made the right(er) choice.

I read a completely different account and cannot find it any where? Is Frank Mc Courts account just made up? Although very dramatic as well, has a very different account altogether. Yet this seems more... Catholic 'editing' ...as the book Frank Mc Court read was an earlier edition, n didn't claim to not understand symbols, numbering and even language...therefore either missing parts or adding possibly interpretations. #canttrustyou

Considering the amount of times the Bible mentions Saints, I'm not convinced that you've actually read it. The 'culture of Saints' is admiring our brethren who have gone before us to Heaven as great examples to get their ourselves as well as trusting in their prayers. Also where do you get the idea that Saints were perfect while on earth, meaning that they never made one mistake?

Yahaira Florentino Every saint is someone who lives eternal life with god in heaven, there are only known saints like Saint Francis and more you know. A saint is someone who lived by gods word there whole life to sum it up.

Some Christians-most Protestants, in fact-deny that the Bible gives support for devotion to the saints, but they are incorrect. The Bible encourages Christians to approach the saints in heaven, just as they approach God the Father and Jesus Christ the Lord: “But you have approached Mount Zion, the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and myriads of angels, and the assembly and church of the firstborn who have been enrolled in heaven, and God the judge of all, and spirits of righteous ones who have been made perfect, and Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and the sprinkled blood which speaks better than that of Abel” (Heb. 12:22-24). It is clear the Christian has approached a number of heavenly beings: the heavenly Jerusalem, the angels, God the judge, and Jesus the mediator. “The assembly and church of the firstborn who have been enrolled in heaven” and the phrase “spirits of righteous ones who have been made perfect” can refer only to the saints in heaven. First, they are spirits, not flesh and blood. Second, they are righteous people, presumably made righteous by Jesus Christ, “who is our righteousness.” Third, they have been made perfect. The only place where spirits of perfected righteous people can dwell is heaven. Furthermore, “spirits of righteous ones who have been made perfect” is a perfect definition of the saints in heaven. This passage is saying that, just as Christians approach the angels, God the judge, Jesus Christ, and his saving blood, so also must we approach the saints in heaven. Does the Bible say we should approach the saints with our prayers? Yes, in two places. In Revelation 5:8 John saw the Lamb, Christ Jesus, on a throne in the midst of four beasts and 24 elders. When the Lamb took the book with the seven seals, the 24 elders fell down before the Lamb in worship, “each one having a harp and golden bowls of incenses, which are the prayers of the saints.”
