The hubby and I went to St. Croix the last week of April this year and it just took my breath away with how beautiful it was. It was the most wonderful time I’ve ever had in my life. I just cannot believe any place could be so gorgeous.

Thank you for the video . From what I saw you don’t need a Jeep to get around. The roads are paved and in good condition in St Croix. Or am I wrong ?
@JesseDaley2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! Yes, roads are overall in pretty good shape! You could probably get away with not needing a Jeep or SUV if you're staying on the regular roads, but it might be a good idea to rent one if you're planning to drive to all sorts or areas on the island. Hope this helps!

Just looking for a nice, warm, quiet, reasonably priced, relaxing place to live out my retirement years. Thanks!
@rodneylewis44025 жыл бұрын
@@standelasanantone2180 Thanks...we've been here just over a week. All-in-all the move went pretty well so far (I still have a container on the way that was loaded just before we left with two of my Jeeps, some leftover household stuff & the tools & Jeep parts from my shop). Definitely would have been a cheaper & easier move if I was single & didn't have my computer (also my job) & Jeep hobbies & wasn't a DIY'er...we sent two containers down that arrived a week ahead of us, the one that is sitting in customs in NY right now, and I'll have one more (20 footer this time) with my last Jeep & whatever didn't fit in the last 40 footer...I'm almost embarrassed to say how much money I spent, but I know it would have been difficult to impossible to replace some of my stuff...we DID pare down a lot (moved out of a 3k sq ft house with 1100 sq ft basement, 2.5 car attached garage, 28 ft 1 car garage/shed, 1280 sq ft outbuilding on 5 acres) and sold the vast majority of our furniture for cheap to a teacher who's house had burned down just before we came down in January to film for HGTV (Sept 8 @ 9 pm eastern is the current scheduled air date). We bought a hot tub & most of our new island tolerant furniture stateside rather than paying extra to special order here or just settle for what is available. The folks here both natives & transplants have been exceedingly kind & helpful. If you are accustomed to or can handle small-town style living, you will be fine. Everyone knows darn near everyone & you'll keep running across the same people in various places. Definitely do not bring any mainland notions of privacy/property with you...if you have fruit trees in your yard, expect to see people pulling up to pick some...everyone looks out for & supports everyone else or they don't last here for long...this was really apparent post-Maria when we came down to house hunt (figured we'd keep the scheduled trip & see the island at it's 'worst' rather than have some dreamy notions). It is more expensive to live here (about 25-30% more, but you can soften that by fishing, raising chickens, avoiding frozen foods, planting a garden, etc). Fresh water is a precious resource (we rely on cisterns, there are water services for bulk water delivery as well as refilling water bottles & jugs) and the electrical grid is not the most stable & is expensive (we'll be going solar...currently have a solar hot water heater). The general recommendation is that if you have a good, reliable vehicle that can be serviced here, ship it down (we bought my wife a new Jeep Wrangler in November & I have a Grand Cherokee & a couple of old CJ's which I have rebuilt myself), rent first to make sure it's right for you (we jumped in...we've moved a few times on our own & are pretty adaptable) & have at least $10-15k in disposable cash/easily accessible funds on hand to get yourself up & running...less of a concern being retired...we're still working age & are looking for jobs, but can coast for a few years if need be. You definitely want to be in reasonably good health...not world class health care, but not the worst either & it is improving. Housing prices are starting to rise due to the re-fit & pending re-opening of the Limetree Bay petroleum storage facility (converting it to also be a refinery) so that could be a challenge, but I do know a couple of property managers & realtors if you need help or a place to stay while you explore the feasibility of moving here.

OLDS98 St. Croix DOES depend on tourism for a good deal of their income, but recently an oil refinery that has been off- line for several years has started up again. "Limetree" will employ a bunch of island folks, and a number of smaller local businesses should benefit as well. Good news for some good people!

@rodneylewis44025 жыл бұрын
It wasn't intended to rely on tourism (St. Thomas is/was), but that's what happened when Limetree shut down several years ago. It is supposed to be reopened this year or next, so there is a LOT of activity going on right now between contractors working on the plant and FEMA workers (they're still recovering from Maria in 2017). We were down there at the end of January & things were buzzing...extended our stay to avoid coming back for the polar vortex & it was almost impossible to find another place to stay or a rental car...we lucked out that our contractor knew the owner of the rental company & called in a favor for us. I think there are some good years ahead for the island.
