John, the situation is not as simple as it seems. When the bridge washed away, there was no other way in or out of the area except the way you see on the video. People had to get home to their families and other responsibilities. We live on a small peninsula surrounded by sea so that road is the only access. When the bridge first washed away they built this temporary bridge that you saw being washed away again. We now have a permanent bridge so the situation should not arise again. Be careful about jumping to conclusions without all the facts especially if the situation occurs in a different country from your own. What you should have seen is a community standing together to help those that had no option but to cross the divide. If you watch the first video you will see exactly the same thing. The guys in red jackets are competent National Sea Rescue volunteers who make themselves available during any type of crisis. These are people doing their very best to help each other. We are very fortunate that ordinary people are always willing to step up.

If I lived here and I was on one side of this collapsed bridge and my family was on the other side I would stay where I was and I would certainly hope that my family would stay where they were. Of course I would like to be with them but I wouldn't want to be with them as much as I would want them to be safe. The risk just seems to outweigh the benefits.

If you build a bridge on the same dirt as the first one that washed away you gotta expect this to happen. The concrete forms on the first one are not sunk into the ground or anchored, they just sit on the dirt. The second one is all dirt except for the pipes. Actually not even dirt, it looks like sand which is not the most stable building material in the world.

Knowing that there was such soft loose foundations, one would think that bridge would have been constructed accordingly and deeper depth reached. The eroding power of water is so much that it it manages to get through a small fissure , the fissure will grow till the while side bank will collapse as was shown through this video. It was not so safe on occasions and people should not have been permitted to cross especially carrying babies in their hand. The power of nature is unstoppable.

It does not appear to be more than drainage pipes, too small at that, with loose dirt piled on top. There really is not much keeping the dirt in place. It almost looks like two seperate earth mounds with different sized pipes. It doesn't make a lot of sense.

"We live on a small peninsula surrounded by sea so that road is the only access." I dont understand this much flow going from sea level to sea level? Shouldn't it be about the same level from both directions, not a massive flow like this?

We had continuous rain for a week so the ground was completely saturated. We then had about 100 mm of rain in a short space of time. The river is called the Sand River which usually has no water flow at all, hence the original bridge structure which washed away two weeks before this bridge washed away.

So many stupid comments here. Isn't it obvious that this is in a third world country where the original concrete bridge was the only connection between the two areas and across this 'river'? During a heavy flood the concrete bridge which served pedestrians and vehicles was washed out and due to the need for people and vehicles with supplies to be able to get from one side to the other, it was replaced with a temporary dirt bridge (dam) which was not sufficient to hold up to the next flood seen in the video. The people that were crossing had no options to go another way because this is the only connection between the two areas. People are either living or working on one side or another and had to cross or get stranded. It is also obvious and stated by the one guy at the end that a team of people were moving several tons of food supplies across that wooden 'bridge' to ensure the people on the other side had food supplies available. This was an emergency situation where a bridge got washed out and people got cut off from their place of home/work and temporary measures were taken to ensure these people were able to cross back to where they had to go.
@jamiebraswell5520

The stupidity starts with the person who posted the video. They gave skant information and basically just left viewers with scenes of collapse and random people who keep crossing. Only towards the end does it even become clear that a truck is being loaded. Still, though, no real context for the overall situation. That doesn't excuse the stupid comments in this section, but it certainly invites them. Thanks for taking the time to do what the person who uploaded the video should have done to begin with...explain the situation. They eventually pinned an explanation at the top of the comments, but that should have been done to start with.

Water is such amazing stuff. A drop is nothing but enough drops and it is the most powerful force in the world. It seems almost joyous to be setting itself free and changing the landscape. However, it was only 18 days between the first "bridge" collapsed and the second one went. I sense an engineering problem here. Perhaps mud is not the best material to use when building over water. I wonder how long it took the build the third one?

So a concrete bridge with huge holes is replaced by some half arsed tiny pipes with sand on top. Stupid. They were going to loose this bridge . Perhaps next time they'll hire someone to command the water to stay back. In keeping with their less effective strategy is the best way forward. Note the first bridge is still more effective than the second as a bridge. Oh and sand, yeah next time use paper that's even more useless as a dam construction material.

This is done in the US also. It takes so long to build the real thing, this is an attempt to get people across the opening. Sand is pretty unstable. If there government is anything like the US, it could take some time to even appropriate the money, take bids on contractors and on and on.

What I don't understand is why the locals just didn't all gather on the causeway and have a big party with lots of stomping & dancing. Or maybe they could have done a fun engineering experiment -- how many people can we fit on this causeway, before it totally collapses? Duh! 🤓

It is annoying, to say the least, that so many people on KZbin post a video with a very specific location, but fail to identify the country the location is in. People in the United States will often post the name or number of a highway, or the name of a creek or canyon, or the name of a town, or the name of a county, but fail to list the state the location is in. We have no idea where Saint Francis Bay is. We have no idea what country in the world, being there are about 195 of them. Eventually the man at the end speaks some words that indicate this might be in South Africa, but that can't be confirmed. Finally a Google search reveals the location, but with the number of videos we watch the isn't time to do so for each one of them. This is an that applies to more than this video, but this human tendency to not follow the old "who, what, where, why and how" principle of reporting is puzzling. It is called the 5 W's and an H method. We don't need to know all of them, but where is essential.
