St. Joseph's College is an affiliated First Grade College of the Bharathidasan University. It was established in 1844 by the Fathers of Society of Jesus (The Jesuits). It was affiliated to the then Madras University in 1866. The College celebrated its centenary in 1944 and sesquicentenary in 1995. The College is owned by the Society of St. Joseph's, a body registered under Societies Regulation Act(1860), having its office at Tiruchirappalli. This Jesuit College trains young men and women of quality to be leaders in all walks of life so that they may serve the people of the nation in truth, justice and love.
I was a student of SJC Trichy, of 1971 vintage. I did my Post Graduation in Botany. I feel even today proud of having been a student of SJC. There were only 5 colleges in the entire state of TN which offered PG in Botany. The total in take was only about 60 students. The other colleges were Presidency, Pachayappas, MCC and I think Holy Cross College, Trichy for only women students. My college was the newest to offer PG course in Botany amongst these colleges. I belonged to the 5th batch of students. For such a new entity, the facilities and resources that were made available to the students we are exceptional. Besides the exceptionally full fledged College Central Library, our PG department had an exclusively specialised Botany library. It was the envy PG students of Botany of other colleges. Our labs were extremely well equipped. We had a very large Herbarium, with an excellent collection.
Admission was transparent, with only merit as the criterion. We had an exceptionally erudite faculty, each teacher being in a class of his own.s
I felt that I was blessed to have had such great teachers. Besides teaching they mentored every one of the 16 students. There was no system of campus placements. And yet, every student who passed got placed in jobs. Most of my classmates took to teaching and they did well.
Besides knowledge we imbibed values too. Even today I remember and rever my teachers. I owe a lot to them.
