Yes, I think they were quite unique, Debra, no doubt brought about by their isolation. Kind regards, Gordon

Great video, well presented and researched. I extended my knowledge on the subject and learnt a lot from the video, so many thanks for that. Easy-to-listen-to story teller. Wonder if he does other subject or does he just cover Scotland? This is the first one I have seen so far, so will check out his other vides to see if they are as good as this one :-)

Thank you Gordon. I did so enjoy your insights into the fascinating history of Island St. Kilda and its ancient lineage. My interest was piqued by the title, because as a Melburnian now, one of our prominent vibrant city suburbs bears the name of St. Kilda, an obvious tribute those original emigre`s and their lonely island. Cant help wondering how many of our citizens know of the origins of the name for Melbourne`s St. Kilda. Again thanks for this enlightening video.

Hi Gordon, enjoying your videos very much. I’m a Scot who now lives in England. So it’s nice to hear a familiar accent and also hear some interesting things about my homeland. All the best

I enjoyed the history of St. Kilda very much . I have seen several fiction works made into movies about people that moved from such islands and now I can see why they would have to move. It was wonderful to see how they met together and decided how to help all on the island together . We have do not see this as much now and it refreshing to see that it is not forgotten. THANKS Mike G.

Thanks, Mike. Whilst it is sad that the island had to be abandoned you can see how this had to happen, for the benefit of the residents. It was great to see how the government of the day stepped in to help them, and thought about where best to re-settle them. Kind regards, Gordon

Hi Richard. As far as I know you can only go for day trips. If you want to stay overnight I think you may have to take a cruise. Here’s details of one firm offering day trips, but there are probably others. Maybe search the internet? www.kildacruises.co.uk/st-kilda Hope you get there! Kind regards, Gordon

And was it originally known as "skelda" old norse for "a shield"? SEAN DHONNCHAIDH
@gordonsscotland8441
@gordonsscotland8441 3 ай бұрын
There are lots of theories about where the name came from, Sean, as there is no saint called ‘St Kilda’. One is as you say from the Norse name for shields - ‘Skildir’. Another is that it is a corruption of the Norse word ‘kelda’ meaning ‘well’ as there is an important well on the main island, Hirta. And there’s also the view that it is an adaptation of ‘Skildar’ the name of an island that appeared on a map of Scotland dating to 1583. Nobody really knows, I’m afraid! Kind regards, Gordon
