Along with that, the jet blast kicks up enough dust to sand blast your face, risking eye injuries. The other risk is damage to your hearing. It’s almost unbearable.

How do you think that? The MD-80’s GE two JT8D’s have a range of 14-17,000 pounds per engine. The B747’s four JT9D’s have a thrust range of 46-50,000 pounds per engine. I am curious.
@HvdH-Plane10 күн бұрын
You are absolutely right about the total power, but with the 4 engines it is spread over a large width. With the MD80 both streams combine to form one jet stream that can reach up to 300 km/h right in the middle. I felt that myself and I almost couldn't hold me on the fence. If you just move 1 or 2 meters to the side, it isn't so bad. You can see that very clearly in the place where the 2 women are blown into the water by the jet stream and almost nothing happens to the people next to them.

Did it a few years back. A 747 was about to take off. As it swung around you could see the pilots waking in a way telling us to leave but no one did. So the plane sat there for a few minutes then it slowly taxied to the opposite end of the runway, turned and then took off. It was amazing as it headed towards us. Me and my wife stepped to the side. When it went over the top of us some people actually got blown over to the ground. It was then that I realized the pilots we telling us to move, getaway because a plane of that size with 4 engines would have caused pain to us...lol!

Wow......I honestly thought that KLM 747 was automatically No.1 but then happy to discover that my favorite the "Mad Dog"MD80 took the top spot and understandably so. In my opinion, one the reasons being Its two engines being mounted at the tail compared to on the wings of other jets, placed the crowds of people closer to the enormous thrust generated at take off. Its a pity that the MD 80s are being replaced with newer more fuel efficient aircraft.
@HvdH-Plane5 жыл бұрын
I think that the jet stream of the two engines combined to a very strong jetstream - focused on the middle area - like you see in the video where in the middle jet blast the people roll down the beach and a few meters to both sides, the people stay nearly without any influence from the jet blast. In the middle you will have about 300 km / h speed of the jet-stream.

St. Maarten Jet Blast Issue: The habit of holding onto the airport fence to feel the jet blast is absurd! People have been killed doing this. However from watching a lot of aviation videos and having a long technical background, I se a possible solution.Given also that local auhtorities cannoit close the road as it would stand local residents, it might be feaible to exchange thst fence for a strong cement wall forther protected by engineered runway material on the runway side. This would have two potential effects: 1) The solid wall would sim;ly block the jet blast from the beachgoers ending their dangerous sport. 2) The engineered material might well serve to save lives and damage in the unusual event that a plane had to make an emergency landing coming in from ther mountain side. this is especially notable as a plane landing this way would have to make a fast vertical descemnt to avoid th mountains and still touch down early enough to have enough runway to stop, that especially if the emergency were to happen with concurrent problems, such as wet runway, reverse thruster problems and more. Also travel agents booking flights into Princess Juliana should be required to warn all passengers explicitly every time such a booking is done. also public notices in travel agencies, online etc. need to explicitly warn about the concern anbd when the wall is done, explain why theis was necessary to protect lives in spoite oif tourists not heeding previous warnings!
@slowpoke45574 жыл бұрын
@@BrucexfromxCanada i agree and disagree with you. I agree that people should be warned (as if they aren't already lol) but I disagree on ending this "sport" as far more people are enjoying it than not. Ending it would also take away from some tourism. This appears to be somewhat of a well known tourist attraction and I myself am actually contemplating on breaking my rule of NO FLYING just to experience this. People would stand behind the dragster while they cranked and ran it. We knew what was gonna happen, and when they switched it over to nitrous it was like poison gas and would send everybody running lol.
@bbigjohnson0693 жыл бұрын
Yes, I've been many times late 80s all through the 90s. Went on a Sat. I think it was. Walking around the pits we got so lucky at least 5-6x we happened to be right where they were firing one up. It was uncanny how it just happened that we'd be in the right place at the right time. The fire up on methanol and run it for about 10 secs. It has a smoother idle. Then they switch it over to nitromethane (not "nitrous") first one pump then 2nd fuel pump. There is no mistaking the crackling of nitro. If you're downwind you're in trouble. You're eyes and lungs will start to burn when you get a big whiff. Then they crack the throttle to seat the clutch and it scares the shit out of everybody. LOL!

The #1 clip with the Insel Air flight was the best....looked like they were doing a brake stand on the end of the runway before finally starting their take-off. Enjoyed the video! :)

Thank you and that makes me happy, that you liked the video. With the insel Air you are right. Sometimes up to 15 seconds full power with the activated brakes. The island photograph Georgino called it: "The pilots like it doing a show".

The JT8D engines on the MD-80 don't spool up nearly as fast as the newer turbo fans. With the short runway they have to have max thrust prior to starting there roll as they use up a large amount of runway prior to rotation.

I’ve never understood people wanting to be sand blasted by the jet engines. That runway is so short it’s amazing jumbo jets can get in and out.

Great Job! My wife and I have been there a couple of times through cruises, used to be one of our favorites spots. There is a great Bar to the right of the runway (if your facing the runway) right on the Beach. Great place to relax after experiencing some of the landings and takeoffs. Thanks for posting!

Yeah, a bar to the right of the runway, perfect. BYE, BYE TIKI HUT, and 15 ft swells from jet blast, peoples shit floating in the bay, hysterical...lol

Amazing how far back that blast goes. Those planes were at the end of the runway probably 3000 ft away and people still getting blasted.

Yes, that's realy amazing and I never have seen it before.

The blast is strong enough to keep the metal bird that is insanely heavy in the air for hours it can be faster than a tornado or hurricane just imagine what it can do to you.
