Greek Orthodox Pascha, Greek Easter, holds mystical and spiritual significance within this most ancient Christian faith. It is a time when the faithful participate in elaborate and deeply symbolic liturgical services, such as the Holy Saturday midnight service, where the resurrection of Jesus Christ is proclaimed with great joy and reverence. Fireworks go off all over Greece the moment the priest comes out of a totally darkened altar into the church chanting the words, "Christos Anesti," Christ is Risen! The symbolism of light overcoming darkness, life conquering death, and the hope of salvation is woven throughout the Paschal traditions, including the use of candles, the ringing of bells, and the chanting of hymns. The Paschal season is a time of fasting, deep reflection, repentance, and renewal, as Orthodox Christians strive to grow closer to God and partake in the mysteries of the resurrection. It is a time when the veil between the earthly and heavenly realms is believed to be thin, and the faithful seek to experience the divine grace and joy that comes with this celebration of springtime spiritual renewal. There can be no resurrection without sacrifice and crucifixion. Following the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus for 40 days plus a holy week, is a trial of personal challenges that leads to great public community celebration. Christ is Risen! The fast is over, let the feast begin!
Many thanks to Lisa Danko for assisting with the photography and video that made this possible as well as Vanessa Mezines who provided the final shot of the Paschal Table which she and many other dedicated volunteers at St. Nicholas church prepared.
