St Patrick's Battalion - David Rovics (Cover) by Seth Staton Watkins
St. Patrick’s Battalion is the story of the Irishmen who fought and died for the Mexican army, after having defected from the imperialist forces of the United States. They were joined by other immigrants, German and Polish, and escaped slaves to fight for the sovereignty and freedom of the Mexican people. It is a story of true heroism in the face of great adversity. And these men deserve their immortal place in this song.
Sing along!
Lyrics:
My name is John Riley
I'll have your ear only a while
I left my dear home in Ireland
It was death, starvation or exile
And when I got to America
It was my duty to go
Enter the Army and slog across Texas
To join in the war against Mexico
It was there in the pueblos and hillsides
That I saw the mistake I had made
Part of a conquering army
With the morals of a bayonet blade
So in the midst of these poor, dying Catholics
Screaming children, the burning stench of it all
Myself and two hundred Irishmen
Decided to rise to the call
From Dublin City to San Diego
We witnessed freedom denied
So we formed the Saint Patrick Battalion
And we fought on the Mexican side
We marched 'neath the green flag of Saint Patrick
Emblazoned with "Erin Go Bragh"
Bright with the harp and the shamrock
And "Libertad para Mexicana"
Just fifty years after Wolftone
Five thousand miles away
The Yanks called us a Legion of Strangers
And they can talk as they may
From Dublin City to San Diego
We witnessed freedom denied
So we formed the Saint Patrick Battalion
And we fought on the Mexican side
We fought them in Matamoros
Where their volunteers were raping the nuns
In Monterey and Cerro Gordo
We fought on as Ireland's sons
We were the red-headed fighters for freedom
Amidst these brown-skinned women and men
Side by side we fought against tyranny
And I daresay we'd do it again
From Dublin City to San Diego
We witnessed freedom denied
So we formed the Saint Patrick Battalion
And we fought on the Mexican side
We fought them in five major battles
Churubusco was the last
Overwhelmed by the cannons from Boston
We fell after each mortar blast
Most of us died on that hillside
In the service of the Mexican state
So far from our occupied homeland
We were heroes and victims of fate
From Dublin City to San Diego
We witnessed freedom denied
So we formed the Saint Patrick Battalion
And we fought on the Mexican side

"I spent 33 years and four months in active military service and during that period I spent most of my time as a high class muscle man for Big Business, for Wall Street and the bankers. In short, I was a racketeer; a gangster for capitalism. I helped make Mexico and especially Tampico safe for American oil interests in 1914. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank boys to collect revenues in. I helped in the raping of half a dozen Central American republics for the benefit of Wall Street. I helped purify Nicaragua for the International Banking House of Brown Brothers in 1902-1912. I brought light to the Dominican Republic for the American sugar interests in 1916. I helped make Honduras right for the American fruit companies in 1903. In China in 1927 I helped see to it that Standard Oil went on its way unmolested. Looking back on it, I might have given Al Capone a few hints. The best he could do was to operate his racket in three districts. I operated on three continents." -General Smedley Butler. Every war they wage is an unjust war on the proletariat. Good on you comrade.

As an Irish republican I faced a court a long time ago to be jailed for my political and active role in the ongoing struggle against the British occupation of the north of Ireland. I decided then to wear a badge, written in Spanish proclaiming the honoured memory of the great San Patricio Battalion, who fought for the honour of Ireland and Mexico against the unjust gringos. It was seen as my rebuke to the court, but they could not bring attention to it in case it became contraversial and might raise a spirit they wanted to ignore.

I don't have a tune but I have a story. My great-grandmother Paula Collins was an Irish immigrant who ended up in Texas with her family. They told her if she married a Mexican they would cut her off. Not only did she marry my popo Ernesto, she told them if they cut her off she would never speak English again and for the rest of her days she only spoke Spanish. Her brother was a Texas ranger.

In that regard you may consider Mick Ryan's Lament, by Robert Dunlap -- I'll post no links nor spoilers, but it's easily searched and powerful.

I really want to thank you for including the lyrics to the music. I am hearing impaired and I can't understand what is being sung most of the time(with all music). If I can read it, I can put it together and it makes sense. Kind of embarrassing but thank you.
