What I hear from locals, Tampa is the place to build stadium
@jeremybingham75058 күн бұрын
Of course but it depends on who you’re asking… locals in Tampa will say Tampa… locals in St. Pete will say St. Pete… and then you have those that are scared to drive across a bridge. The Rays started in St. Pete and they want to stay in St. Pete. They never wanted to move to Tampa but uses Tampa as a negotiation piece.
@Kalbuir668 күн бұрын
@@jeremybingham7505 scared to drive across a bridge?? You come across as a complete disingenuous pile of trash. NO ONE is afraid to drive across a bridge, it just takes FOREVER to get to a game having to go across that bridge during rush hour traffic. The team should be in Tampa. Oh, and I don't live in either city.
@trclark76896 күн бұрын
So, speaking as a native of the Tampa Bay Area (and I'm sure there are some others here as well) Tampa built a stadium for football in the 1970's and was awarded the NFL. Both cities were talking about building a baseball stadium and St. Pete got it done first. One thing to remember about the time that this deal was being put together in the early 1980's is that the population in the Tampa Bay Area in 1980 was 1.3 million. Today, that number has tripled and I don't believe that anyone was expecting the area to grow as quickly as it did. Pinellas County is a peninsula, it has limited land and is overbuilt. Tropicana Field is about 23 miles from Tampa (which is pretty much the central location for the entire area) and there are only two feasible ways to get from Tampa to St. Petersburg, I-275 and Gandy Boulevard, both are long bridges. I-275 has 8 total lanes and Gandy Boulevard has 4 total lanes. Tropicana Field is surrounded by water to the East (7 miles) to the West (2 miles) and to the South (6 miles.) So fans from the East (Tampa) have to travel 23 miles across long narrow bridges at rush hour into one of the most congested counties in the state to attend Rays games in St. Pete. That doesn't include fans that live EAST of Tampa, areas such as Brandon, Plant City, and Lakeland? Forget about it. Fans in Sarasota and Bradenton have similar issues, they have to cross the Sunshine Skyway (another long bridge with only 4 total lanes) 25 miles for Bradenton and 46 miles for Sarasota. Fans in the Gibsonton, Apollo Beach, and Ruskin areas have to decide if they want to trek South and go through Bradenton and cross the Skyway or trek North through Tampa and across the Bay in St. Pete. It was really a dumb idea to put the stadium so far away from the overwhelming majority of their fanbase, but... it was the 1980's and they weren't expecting the population boom that happened. THIS is why people from Tampa say that having the stadium in Tampa is the best possible location because it's more central for EVERYONE to get to the ballpark. People in St. Petersburg and Pinellas will obviously say that people from Tampa and places East that refuse to go to games are lazy, not good fans, full of excuses, or whatever else. Why? Because they're salty about being the "little brother" in the Bay Area. Tampa got the NFL, St. Pete didn't. St. Pete opened the then Suncoast Dome turned Thunderdome when the Lightning and Storm needed a place to play, but both ended up moving to... you guessed it! Tampa. St. Pete was being used and turned down by the Mariners, White Sox, Giants, etc, etc, before finally getting the Rays. The whole reason why Pinellas County started getting butthurt over this deal all of the sudden is because the Rays chose to play their games at Steinbrenner Field in Tampa. The Rays playing in Tampa is going to hurt their pockets. With the Rays playing in Tampa, St. Pete won't have a large revenue driver. This is all political theater. I will say this, especially for the guy saying that people are afraid to drive across a bridge, there are some people in the Tampa Bay Area that are natives and remember when the Sunshine Skyway Bridge was hit by a tanker and collapsed into the Tampa Bay, killing 35 people and they refuse to get on the Bay Bridges. However, my experience while living to the East of Tampa in relation to Major League Baseball was as follows. I lived in Plant City and I worked in Tampa. Lets say it's a random Wednesday afternoon in May and the Rays are playing the A's with a 7:05pm first pitch. I get off from work at 5pm, with the afternoon traffic, it takes me 45 minutes (and that's being generous) to get home from work. It takes another half hour to get changed and get my wife and kids in the truck. Now, we're headed BACK into Tampa (still rush hour, because rush hour lasts forever) it takes another hour to get to Tampa, now we're crawling through downtown Tampa and it's 7:15pm, we're already 10 minutes late. Traffic has thinned out and is now moving, there's no wrecks on the freeway around Dale Mabry or Westshore (for once) and traffic across the bridge is flowing at the posted speed limit. It takes 30 minutes to get to Tropicana Field and get parked. It takes another 20 minutes to get the family into the stadium and find our seats. It's now 8:05pm, we're an hour late and the game is headed into the 4th inning. This scenario is on a GOOD day where there are no wrecks and the kids aren't a PITA to get ready to go. If the stadium had been in Tampa, it would have taken 45 minutes to get home, 30 minutes to get everyone ready, and 45 minutes to get back to Tampa. We're now at the stadium at 7pm. I'm sure I'm not the only one that's had these experiences. This is why attending Rays games for my family was always a 10 game a season ordeal and almost always on the weekend.

You shouldn't be surprised this is political manoeuvring. It's the county that has cold feet, but the county doesn't want to take responsibility for losing the team. First they tried to blame the team, when that didn't work, they forced this vote on the city. This was less of a vote to keep the Ray's and more the city saying they won't be manipulated by the county.

Why aren't St Petersberg Rays fans showing up already, if the team is good, and it has been real good over the past 10 years, have the fans been at the trop? This has been the feel of the “partnership” between the Rays, the city of St. Pete, and Pinellas County for the last 20 years. They really need to divorce and move the team closer to where the majority of the fans live. Tampa Bay can definitely support MLB just like how we support the NFL and NHL.
