It's an interesting piece, but I agree with Robert Wise; there was no theme. The final score wasn't only better, it created a piece of music that is as synonymous with Star Trek as Alexander's Courage's original theme.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I have been looking for the original musical sequence for years. And boy, what a mess it was. It was all over the place! The final version, of course, was Jerry Goldsmith‘s masterpiece. I’m not ashamed to admit that, sitting in the theater Christmas 1979, I openly cried tears of joy when the music crescendoed and we saw the Enterprise clearly for the first time. It was a blah motion picture, but for millions of us Trekkies the Enterprise was as much a character as the magnificent seven. The spacedock sequence… was magical.

I very much agree. I grew up in the movie theaters in remember opening night very well. Finishing the film was so down to the wire that the print was delivered by armed guard to the theater less than an hour before it was supposed to show. Are projectionist joked that it was still wet! Not really, of course, but that's how unusual it was. The audience on that 1st night state almost in a quiet reverence while it played, and then they cheered when the enterprise appeared in this segment. The movie may not have thrilled everyone, but it was quite a feeling on opening weekend, and the music was a huge part of it. The audience applauded at the end of the film and I knew that Goldsmith had created a new classic!

Actually, you can hear the theme hidden in the original, in fits and starts that aren’t allowed to come together and move forward. It’s amazing how similar the two pieces really are. It just took a little tweaking or bringing into focus.

Of all the Star Trek series, TOS is the only one where the ship felt like one of the characters. This sequence, which often gets derided, was a gift to the fans. And I love the ways that Goldsmith encorporated segments of the original version in the final version.

Exactly! A love letter to all the fans who basically begged and pleaded for the studio to revive the series or take it to the big screen. And you are right, the Enterprise DOES feel like a character here. Unfortunately, it was misused in a very weak story. For all the disparaging Shatner gets about being a ham of a actor, you could see the love in his eyes as the retrofitted Enterprise is revealed. The score told the love story that all the best dialog in Hollywood couldn't. Beautiful scene IMO.

Quite right, this is a point that many even in the production don't grasp. We the fans who had watched TOS when it was originally broadcast had for many years thought we would never see the Enterprise again. If people would look at this clip with the thought of a triumphant return of an old friend they might feel differently. :D

The music of the final cut really is more appropriate. The theme captures Kirk's feelings for his ship. It's a solemn moment, pure and holy. It's what binds Kirk with his ship.

For the reveal of the Enterprise, the obvious solution evaded both Wise and Goldsmith. The ship already had a theme (from the TV series) and using that would have shouted to the audience "THIS IS THE ENTERPRISE!" At the end of "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home," when the Enterprise-A is revealed from behind the Excelsior, this was finally remembered...and used.

Interesting that Wise discarded this theme because he said it reminds him too much of sailing ships. When Nicholas Meyer assigned Jamer Horner to write the score for Star Trek II, he told him he wants a score which evokes the feel of sailing ships on a "high seas adventure".

It was to do with what the director wanted. Wise, as well as Gene Roddenberry and Paramount, was trying to capture the essence of 2001, Close Encounters and Star Wars = to make Star Trek "real" sci-fi. Nick Meyer saw it more as "Hornblower in space" and shot it that way not only with the music but with "running out the guns" in the torpedo bay and other visual cues. When he returned for Star Trek VI, pay attention to ship interior scenes. Many were shot with a "rocking motion" as if on a ship at sea.

I think there's difference between Goldsmith's early theme and Horner's. Goldsmith's first pass does indeed lack a significant, easily remembered motif. Horner's theme has a very definite driving motif (the flowing fanfare that serves as a shared theme for the Enterprise and Kirk). While both compositions have a seafaring feel, only one is truly successful as theme music. But if it were to come down to Horner's theme vs. Goldsmith's official STAR TREK theme, Goldsmith would win hands-down. The music he would eventually come to is virtually unbeatable.

I wasn't quite old enough to see TOS on TV in its first run, but I was in the first generation that had the series as reruns. Very little on TV was as important to me as TOS, and as much as I like Star Wars, my first love affair with science fiction was Star Trek. I remember sitting in the theater on opening day to see ST:TMP, and no movie in my life until then made me cry with such joy. I can imagine being Kirk, coming around in the shuttle pod for that first view of the Enterprise...the self-recrimination for EVER accepting a desk job, the happiness of the reunion, the excitement to be "out there" again, and the anticipation of returning to all those "unknowns" that he must have reminded Admiral Nogura about in his plea to get back command. The music in the theatrical release was all that, and more, as spoken the way only an orchestra speaks. Although the original score in this video was good, and there were a few moments that contains some phrases from what was eventually released, it just doesn't speak to me the same way. After all these decades, the music I have in my heart and head *STILL* gives me chills as I watch and re-live that scene. For a few minutes, all the crap of life in the 2020's fades away, leaving me with the dream that one day, we can focus on star-stuff, as Gene Roddenberry envisioned we might one day achieve, leaving the political, social, religious, and sexual angst where it belongs: in the dumpster.

You know, I really have to appreciate Jerry Goldsmith's attitude here. Of course he was unhappy that his original piece (that he put alot of work into) was rejected, but he kept pushing to get a reason why Wise didn't like it. And when Wise was able to put it in words ("There's no theme"), Goldsmith understood and made the next draft, and so much better. A true passionate professional.

In many ways, Star Trek reminds me of 18th century exploration. Sailing ships, set in the 23rd century. I mean to say that's the feeling I get. The music they used for the motion picture fit the film like a glove.

Wise is right, this score sounds like sailing ships, but it is very good. The final theme expresses the mystic of space and the refitted Enterprise much more than this one. But there are many parts, which Goldsmith reused, for example when the capsule comes around to the front of the Enterprise and passes the saucer section.

I have toyed with the idea of scoring this knowing full well that no one could top Goldsmith's monumental score. A sort of Kobayashi Maru scoring test for film composers. You know you can't beat it, but you have to try.

Amazing that the primary missing piece is merely the (a) Theme. I totally agreed with 'Bob' here... listening to this unused music, it was definitely missing something significant. I've listened to this soundtrack so many times that I was missing that obvious point. Conversely, the final cut that we got from Goldsmith is absolutely an angelic score, and is without question my all-time favorite soundtrack among my large collection (the ST-TMP 20th Anniv Edition specifically.) This issue makes complete sense when we compare it structurally to 'Star Wars IV: ANH' (my 2nd favorite of everything), as that score has many themes which recur and are weaved among each other. Both are such melodic brilliance. I don't think the world will see an equal to these things moving forward.

The “final” version is what made this scene so epic in scope. This earlier revision made the scene seem about 1/2 size. It was almost like listening to the original on a transistor radio. If only the plot of the movie matched the grandeur of the score, and the talents of the cast..........Oh, well. We eventually got Star Trek’s Ii,Iii, IV,, and VI. At least TMP had a great score!!!!!

When Scotty turns the shuttle craft to go head on with the Enterprise, Kirk gets that "I'm in love" look on his face. Goldsmith was writing love music. I do really like the score that was used in the release much better, though.

Visions of Sailing Ships is what you want. The Enterprise is the Greatest Sailing Ship in Space. I don't understand Wise getting turned off to "Visions of Sailing Ships". It's all great. It's GOLDSMITH.

The problem, as Wise finally articulated, was that there wasn't a definitive Enterprise theme. While this is a nice piece of music, the Enterprise theme is not fully formed at all and the composition lacks focus. When Goldsmith finally hit upon the theme proper, Wise's issues with the music were resolved.

Wow. The second version is so ingrained in my memory, it's hard to imagine this first version being used. It's my favorite track from the album, along with the love theme. The first version isn't bad but it meanders around with a kind of improvisational or random feel to it. The Final Score was something that could have been played in a symphony hall in the 19th Century and well received. ST:TMP is one of my favorite movie soundtracks of all time. They didn't get a lot right with the first movie, but the music salvaged what could have been a disaster. When I first saw these interviews on the deluxe DVD, I was excited because it gave me some true inside information. The original music was nice, but not exciting. The revised version makes the "reveal" of the Enterprise more dramatic. It always interests me to read how music doesn't necessarily start out as a finished product, but often needs to be tweaked and worked at.

Jerry still got to have the last laugh. He worked his original theme into Star Trek V in the scene where Kirk, Spock and Bones are in the shuttle, returning to the Enterprise after their shore leave 😊

God bless Robert Wise. This version is still good, but by asking Goldsmith to rework it and emphasize a theme, he pushed Goldsmith into creating one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever to be put to film. The entire score to Star Trek: The Motion Picture really is Goldsmith's masterpiece and "The Enterprise" is the crown jewel of the score.

This theme should be used in a new edition of TMP where they do a flyby of the new Farragut first before moving onto the Enterprise. You know, just to drive some people clinically insane over the length of some of the film's scenes :p

Nice music! I love ST:TMP and feel that the music is among the best in the franchise. I like the score that was recorded with this scene as the transitions are smoother and has a warmer feel to it. It also has more of a "Trek" sound to it. This one seems to have elements of 2001.

The title theme for TMP is prob the most recognizable piece as being Star Trek. Definitely one of my favorite Trek scores. And the Ilia Love Theme is gorgeous.

I think TMP and Wrath of Khan had the best scores in the franchise. And I love the otherworldly quality of the Ilia theme, especially the bridge.

I had never heard this before. It is actually a pretty decent composition (although it meanders) and would probably have been acceptable on most movies but Robert Wise understood that this film was a prestige picture for Paramount and that in his mind the music here didn't quite work. Actually Goldsmith only appears to have tweaked this as it sounds fairly similar (I'd say about 60% of this sounds the same) but the other 40% that was rewritten made a huge difference. STTMP has one of the best orchestral soundtracks of all time and you have to give Wise credit for that as he pushed Goldsmith to try that little bit harder and come up with a work of genius,

As a standalone, this one is better -- just more complex and vibrant. For the scene, which is not complex at all but showy, the second version works better.

Although this is a beautiful piece of music in its own right im glad Wise got Goldsmith to rework the score, it really worked out in the end.

You have to remember that SF films did not traditionally use proper themes. 'Star Wars' was heroic fantasy wrapped up in a space technology setting and big heroic/romantic music was appropriate. The most famous and admired SF film scores were 'The Day The Earth Stood Still', 'Forbidden Planet', 'Planet of the Apes', 'The Andromeda Strain', 'Logan's Run', 'The Thing' (1951), etc. None of them used big themes, but instead used unsettling, strange and new sounds. So Goldsmith wouldn't have been expected to provide a clear main theme.

A Beautiful original piece, but I have to agree with Wise. The ship is as much a character as anyone else and if the film has a theme it should be used for the ship, as well. I think the finished piece gives a bigger punch to the Enterprise's "face reveal."

It also bothered people to see the Enterprise get visibly damaged in WRATH OF KHAN. Some older fans admitted to being horrified when Khan's phasers left actual burns on the Enterprise's surface.

The melody is very similar, he just changed it to make it sound more like a starship, and there you have it!

ugh, sorry this was the scene that cause me to walk out on the movie. I still couldn't watch it with "unused music" either. Sorry, it's not your fault. A lot of people like it, I'm just not a lot of people. Still gave it a thumbs up for the work!

I'm countered the same issue while recently watching Wonder Woman 1984. Lots of action and visuals and the music is loud and stirring. But there was no theme. At least nothing terribly discernible, recognizable, and memorable. And then towards the end when there was an important moment, suddenly we're listening to music from Batman V Superman when Bruce's parents are being killed in the opening credits. What the?
