Staatsorchester Stuttgart - Die Tuba - Musiker und ihre Instrumente

Im Orchester bildet die Tuba, zusammen mit den Kontrabässen, das Fundament des Gesamtklanges. Im "schweren Blech" sitzt die Tuba bei den Posaunen und erweitert das Register bis tief hinunter in die Kontralage. Unser Kollege Thomas Brunmayr erzählt uns, ob man wirklich ein riesiges Lungenvolumen braucht und wie eine Tuba funktioniert und klingt. Ausserdem hat er aus seinem Privatbesitz ein paar echte Raritäten mitgebracht! Vielen Dank dafür!

WHAT A SOUND . !!!! Incredible sonority in the sound and focus. If I may suggest..... In the States we have LEMON PLEDGE furniture polish. It now comes in packages of 24 individual moist and disposable towelettes. This PLEDGE is perfect for wiping off finger prints and keeping your non-laquered horns sparkling. It also guarantees that all perspiration and other bodily fluids will be removed safely. I have used the spray PLEDGE for years on my 1896 Boston Alto Horn and on my French Horns. There is no chance of causing any damage to the brass instrument. One application of LEMON PLEDGE will be sufficient for months because the polish will be removed gradually as you wipe the horn off every day. There is a disturbing tendency to use products like WINDEX on brass instruments. This is a bad idea. For one thing, WINDEX contains ammonia. The WINDEX will strip any sense of lubrication to the metal and will leave the horn excessively dry.

3:30 Kleine Ergänzung: die unterschiedliche Tonhärte wird durch die unterschiedlich ausgeprägte Obertonreihe verursacht, da die konischen Instrumente eine gegenüber den zylindrischen Instrumenten im höheren Bereich deutlich ausgedünnte Obertonreihe aufweisen. Die hörbare Härte wird aber durch die hohen Obertöne erzeugt, daher klingen alle konischen Instrumente wg. schwächerer Obertöne weicher.

2:10 3 Ventile reichen nur deshalb für den Trompeter, weil er den kranken Ton cis1 mit dem Griff 1+2+3 wieder mit dem Triggerzug gesund machen kann. Der Triggerzug ersetzt also quasi ein zusätzliches Ventil, denn ohne den Triggerzug wäre auch beim hohen Blech zumindest ein Quartventil für d1 und cis1 fällig, evtl. sogar ein weiteres Ventil, um den Kombigriff 2+3 in die Rente zu schicken.

So I think he was saying that the Bb tuba has more intonation problems because it's longer/wider than the F tuba. But why doesn't it have more valves to compensate rather than having to pull the slides out like that? I've never seen that before in the middle of a performance (I mean, maybe I haven't looked hard enough). And if the Bb has those problems, then why use it versus the F tuba, when they both have about the same range? I guess the tone weight of the Bb is superior in the lowest register?

You are right that the Bb has a superior low range compared to F tubas. The F tuba has a superior high range to the Bb so I wouldn't consider the usable range even close to the same. The reason that the F tuba has the extra valves is to access the low range -accurately!!!- that is needed in most pieces. Him pulling slides on the Bb is just to perfect the pitch. Each note on any horn has a tendency to run either flat or sharp. While you can get rid of this instance with valves: replacing 1 and 3 (always sharp) with a 4th valve etc... you can also train to adjust pitch with slides. - Hope this helps but also i'm not a professional I just play a lot of tuba :)

3:00 Wow, selbst bei einem Profi hört sich der Pedalton auf der Tuba eher so mittel an. Zum Glück ist das bei einem weit mensurierten Bariton deutlich besser, aber auch eine halbe Oktave höher (gegenüber der F-Tuba).
