To this day the best surfing I've ever seen in my life is Andy at Tunnel's 2001. I got to talk to him for like 45 minutes at the restaurant I was working as a bartender around that time, his boys were all raging but he was sitting at the bar solo looking glum, asked if he was alright it turns out he had just broken up with his girl who I had known from Cali, always feel blessed I had that chance to get to know him just a little bit. Just two dudes talking about girls and life and shit, was pretty dope. RIP bruddah.

Hopefully somone can explain. So ive veen watching andy irons surf videos since i was young. I never understood and still dont why everyone says he was the best surfer in the world. There are so many surfers that can do alot more moves and crazy laybacks like clay marzo or john john and toledo with airs. Im not knocking one bit just really woyld like to know what im missing. Thanks
@grahamjarman6 жыл бұрын
saying he was the best is an expression of admiration. he had a unique presence, drive and personality which was reflected in his surfing style. hes gone too soon. he won 3 consecutive titles bc of his determination, and explosive consistency. plus he seems pretty gnarly and stoked, wild guy to hang with. sure u can argue many others are technically superior, so go watch their vids then. it wont be power surfing but acrobatics. apples and oranges. whats the point of arguing which tastes better. the mans a legend.
@MrCow-bk8jp6 жыл бұрын
His style is super unique and the guy is a complete legend, I think that his surfing is way more fun to watch than any other modern day surfer
@surfjujitsu24566 жыл бұрын
@@MrCow-bk8jp ok so its more of a style over technique and also how the person was. cool to hear of what people consider the best surfer is from different parts of the world. Where i come from if you could do things that others cant do on the same wave you are considered the best.

Why are they saying Andy wouldn't do an air or a blow tail or something of that sort? Yeah Andy bashed the lip harder than everyone in this video, but he also did airs and plenty of other rad skatey type shit from time to time. Kind of stupid , some of the things said in this video. Cringey at points. "Im just gonna get really angry and smash shit." Yeah thats what Andy was thinking...give me a break. I battled with opiate addiction just like Andy, and thats not how is mind was working trust me. Thats a simpleton view from someone who doesn't actually have a clue what Andy was going through trying to explain what they think was going through his mind. If you have to ask why Andy was so good, Then you are blind. Just look at his clips compared to the three surfers in this video , who are the "top" guys right now. His style, his lines, his approach. It LOOKED absolutely amazing. He had a presence on the wave that none of these guys have. He was the fucking man. And doing little tricks is cool, but Andy made just riding down the line look sicker than any of these kids and their tricks.
@existinguser77884 жыл бұрын
i've always tried to emulate Andy's style of smashing the lip, even if it meant I didn't get as far in competition surfing because everyone else was doing flicky airs and air reverses. Competition surfing has gotten worse. RIP Andy

Sorry guys, but none of you come remotely close to Andy. And to think you'll get even halfway there is wishful thinking. Andy chose different lines, different timing, savant consciousness, beyond advanced ergonomics and body dynamics that are from an upper echelon of existence. He was the genius of all genius short board surfers, inimitable and pure raw perfection, like the Michael Angelo of surfing style. He is the icon of shredding. I was there and witnessed him growing up and changing surfing forever, forever! And Bruce was a big part of that formula. Andy may be gone in one form, but he lives in every single one of us who witnessed him in action and every person he influences and touches forever more through videos and movies. Every time I ever watched him surf in person here in Hawaii I just thought, how in the history of the Earth could anybody be so good? Andy just is...
