The system is broken, trained, and experienced health care workers are being drained to overseas recruitment. Not addressing the problem but keep sourcing for cheaper workforce is a terrible approach. There is even a MSM article, a filipino nurse worked here for more than 10 years decided to call it quit because of the system. It is no longer a health care but a revenue care.

"I think if you work as a radiologist, you are like the coyote that’s already out of the edge of the cliff but hasn’t yet looked down. We should stop training radiologists now. It's just completely obvious that within five years, deep learning is going to do better than radiologists.” Geoffrey Hinton, 2016

The pay is so low compared to so many other sectors. Healthcare workers have to work on 1 weekend as well. How are you gonna compensate us? Nowadays the young graduating pharmacist dont want to work retail hours 😅 so how?

my pay has not increased. As a Radiographer licensed in Xray, MRI, and CT I can say that the shortage is world wide. The company I work for has 11 openings... that is only in MRI!!

Healthcare sector, not inclusive of medical doctors, does not pay employees enough to survive in Singapore. I am not referring to working overtime or on off days or nights shifts to get paid extra. Basic pay should at least be worth as healthcare courses like pharmacy degree overseas 5 years back cost fee is around over $100k. Having worked as a trainee and qualified, the work stress due to dealing with angry customers and patients is not worth the salary. Other sectors such finance and administration pay employees higher starting salary with work life balance and also, office hours. Working in healthcare like community pharmacy will not be paid extra for working on weekend. In addition, long standing hours leading to feet ache at end of each day. Healthcare courses are not easy to pass as a lot of memorisation and assessments to make sure students are ready to face the public and provide safe medical support and advice. Once you come back to Singapore, you still have to sit for exams here to convert your practicing license. Only if the professional medical boards provide sufficient on the job training rather than stressing the students to sit for further exams to convert/obtain license in Singapore...

Short in supply is an excuse used to justify import foreigners into Singapore

One year how many graduates from these courses? How many schools are offering such courses in Singapore. For radiography, I believe it is just SIT and Parkway. Many new hospitals are opening up, many enrolling on wellness scan, local recruitment are just not enough to fill the roles.

Didn't the MOH outsourced the radiographer's work to India many, many years ago? Or was it the radiologist's work?
“Healthcare is a need and not a commodity,” said Dr. Gomez, to drive home the point that for-profit healthcare systems have failed to support citizens in the fringes of our society. It is noteworthy to mention what Dr. Chee Soon Juan said in his opening remarks, that some Singaporeans have told him, “it is better to die than to fall sick in Singapore.” He has taken heed and it seems like he has gone all out to ensure that no sick man goes untreated, no family needs to be financially burdened when their loved ones fall sick and most importantly, everyone in Singapore has access to basic healthcare.

SDP’s healthcare plan is a total affront to the current practise of commercialization of healthcare in Singapore. With no representation in parliament, it makes one wonder why they are putting so much effort - it can’t be, as they put it, for PAP to plagiarize their plans. Or perhaps, it could be an indication of their larger plans, both for Singapore and SDP in 2016.
