I actually like the idea of having “regular” multitasking on the iPad and stage manager on the external display. I can see that being my main setup. I think both multitasking’s works for different situations. It’s what I like about the iPad, or the idea of the iPad hahaha, versatility.

The iPad Pro M1 is my “computer” and I like the iPad OS 15 way of multitasking just fine. Having external monitor support will be nice (once it works nice) but other than that, I rarely use stage manager.

“Clamshell” Workaround - dim screen (to minimize heat build-up while closed), then go to Settings > display & Brightness and turn Lock / Unlock toggle switch to the off position. Problem solved! Just make sure you’re plugged in to power and remember to change the setting when you’re ready to go mobile again. Also, congrats on joining 9 to 5 Mac! Sounds like a win for you and for 9 to 5 Mac. 😁🐬

The extended display only works because you have a mouse connected. If you are not using a Magic Keyboard AND there’s no other mouse connected, it will default to the old external screen support (with the black bars on the side). Also, the iPad does not and will support multiple external displays. Those options are just for you to arrange how the displays are relevant to each other so that the mouse cursor flows from the iPad to the external display in a logical fashion.

Can you check if it works with a bluetooth mouse and no magic keyboard. I have seen somewhere that you need a type adapter which has a usb for mouse dongle. That's the only question I had. Thanks for such an informative video

I will not try to replace my laptop with iPad anymore… 11” with stage mode is a joke, side by side and floating video player works way better. Hopefully Apple will bring back 11-12” MacBook.

I tried this the other day on beta 2, the RDP app doesn’t like being run on the external display. Perhaps the apps themselves need to be tweaked to accommodate this?

Another thing if you do want to use the iPad when you close down the screen on the magic keyboard there is an option in the display settings of the iPad it says unlock/lock automatically if you turn that off when you close the screen of the iPad on the magic keyboard it won't turn off the screen but it will dim the brightness and it will keep the external display up an running

iPad OS 16 with Stage Manager and second monitor support is definite improvement over iPad OS 15, but it still does not make my 12.9-inch M1 iPad Pro with 2TB storage a standalone computer. For that I need to be able to unmount, repair and format external drives, run virtual machines, program in C++, run Pro Apps, etc. I rarely use my MacBook Pro these days, and I will never buy another Apple laptop because they have an antiquated UI, as I need a mobile device to have touch display and pen support. I am also now unlikely to upgrade my iPad Pro because I feel let down by Apple, as they are too focussed on marketing spin, and they completely fail to deliver customer requirements on the arrogant pre-text that they know best. I will probably replace my iPad Pro with a next generation Microsoft Surface Pro, preferably with either an AMD 6000 series APU or new high performance ARM processor (re: Microsoft / Qualcomm collaboration). Windows 11 has improved significantly over Windows 10, and I can readily run virtual machines and graphical Linux apps alongside my Windows apps. I've been using Apple products for over 20 years, and their hardware is excellent but their operating systems, especially iPad OS, seemed to be designed to frustrate by placing too many restrictions on what you can do, rather than delight the end user. Their rational around improved security is over played, and its more about getting you to buy more of their hardware, since the iPad is primarily designed as a Mac accessory (aka sidecar and universal control), and I have now come to point where I am reluctant to invest more effort and money in Apple's ecosystem.

It's simple... You're not Apple's target customer. It's designed for people that just want it to work and care more about the look and status of the Apple logo, use an iPhone like all their friends and have no interest or ability to do things like code, run a virtual machine, etc. I've got an Samsung Galaxy Book2 Pro - the screen is a little more flexible than I would like but it's the most Apple version of a Windows dual use laptop/tablet. I like it much better than the Surface computers but that's just me

Put iOS 16 Beta 3 on my M1 2TB iPad Pro and the secondary monitor only displays 1024 x 768 resolution on my 4K monitor. Both HDMI inputs and DisplayPort inputs present the iPad in this same low resolution. Is there a way to adjust the resolution from the iPad? Stage Manager doesn’t work at all.

External monitor support is different from stage manager, if you connect your iPad to external monitor and then connect a mouse to the iPad don’t care is this via cable or Bluetooth then the external monitor support kicks with the stage manager view on the external screen. So you don’t need to enable this.

I think that the issues you are facing might very well be due to the aspect ratio of the display, these issues may not be there if you connect the studio display or the pro XDR.

iPhone exclusive apps are not designed to be resized larger than iPhone displays. These resize issues are also present in the XDR display (so I am told, I do not own one). This is also why the resizing is somewhat limited and appears to be on a grid when using apps that have been designed for the iPad and other devices.

Or will it always scale down to the ipad resolution but just in the monitor‘s „orientation“ to use it full screen? You know what I mean? Let‘s consider I‘m using an 11“ iPad Pro: will it be different on an external monitor compared to the 12.9“ ? On iPad OS 15 it makes a difference…that‘s why I‘m asking…it it can bring the native resoltion of the monitor to the screen…an 11“ iPad Pro might be a better choice for people dealing with desktop screen space in their office right now. If it doesn‘t make any difference anymore, the portability of the 11“ iPad Pro can be an important factor in future if you mainly use it with an external monitor in your office anyways. I can’t get it to work. I’m on the 5th gen iPad Pro 12, using HyperDrive GEN2 Thunderbolt USBC dock, HDMI to a TCL TV. Anyone else using something like this? The TV shows up in Display & Brightness > Displays, settings on the iPad, but nothing shows on the screen… not mirroring or extending. Have even rebooted everything. LOL please help!

HOW should it work in clamshell mode if you don't have any input device connected? What kind of test was that...? No computer would work this way. You didn't put it in clamshell mode, you have simply closed it. For clamshell mode, it needs to have an external keyboard (and mouse) to be connected and also plugged it into the power supply. 😏

Don’t know if it’s a bad install but Stage Manager is FUBAR for me. I have the same iPad Pro you do. When I turn it on the background changes to solid gray and the pointer acts weird. When I connect it to an older 2K monitor via USB-C to Displayport I get the full screen desktop but the cursor will freeze randomly on the external and completely disappear on the iPP. I can’t run apps on the external. I have to move them from the iPP to the external. It’s unusable for me

Will the iPad with iPadOS 16 replace my work MacBook? No. But i really hope, that I can use my iPad in the future as my main personal device on an external display. That is my main hope for the release of iPadOS 16. It can't replace my work Laptop at the moment because I need software that still doesn't have iPad versions.
