Beautiful design and execution, you earned a new subscriber. Historically to my wife’s regret, I’m not a fan of this style of cabinet but the stained glass and stain have won me over. I think I’m going to need to add a few projects that incorporate your ideas.

Happy to help with some inspiration! Stain is a fun thing to play around with, it really opens up alot of creative freedoms with a project. Then the stained glass is just fun to make too!

I was excited to hear you made your own stained glass. My aunt worked with stained glass as a career or small business making stained glass for churches and custom commissions… I’ve always wanted to learn but it just never happened. Anyways glad you’re giving it a try, not as easy as some might think that’s for sure and especially cutting out delicate, intricate pieces

The main thing that made me want to try it was that I found plain glass to boring! Now I'm kind of obsessed with adding it to projects!

Nice project...don't forget that in addition to working great and being traditional, wood drawer slides save a bunch of money!
@morganhurst_redridge

That is another great reason to use them! Saving around $30 a drawer definitely makes a big difference to the project!

Again, you've taken nasty red oak and made it look very striking. The stained glass work is interesting. I used to watch a series on PBS on weekends in the 1990's on stained glass and it is something worth incorporating into your work for sure! Well done Morgan.

Red oak is one of those woods where I think the more you do to it the better it'll look, also helps that the stained glass takes most of the attention!

Great video. I like your designs. And I like your method of construction too. I see you pushing that #7 to finish the surface on that board. Wax the bottom of the plane and save your muscles. It's surprising how much friction there is between the plane and timber.

I keep it pretty well waxed, I just tend to look like i'm struggling anytime I use hand tools!

Funny you mention the full frame between the legs instead of building the panel into the legs. That's one of my favorite details of your pieces and I've been meaning to build myself some bedroom furniture by stealing your technique! That extra level of detail in the setbacks created by your technique gives the pieces such a stately architecture. It's a detail that makes other people's furniture seem lacking by comparison. You've definitely got a style that stands out. I dig it a ton.

Totally agree with the dowels. I bought a dowelmax years back (because I couldn’t afford a domino) and have made a ton of things. It is super accurate and well made. Nothing wrong with dowels at all. They essentially are a floating tenon.
@morganhurst_redridge
@morganhurst_redridge 8 ай бұрын
I've been thinking about buying the dowelmax! The jig I have only works for centering the dowels, so it kind of limits the options but the dowelmax would definitely solve that problem.

Consider jessem's jig. It is cheaper and can be used in a variety of different ways (namely, in the middle of sheets). I'm in love with it.

Aesthetic is personal ; skill is universal. I’m not a great fan of the colour of the timber - that’s just personal and I know others will love it. The stained glass really lifts the piece - the design seems heavily influenced by Frank Lloyd Wright who seems to have been influenced by Macintosh of UK Arts and Crafts. The style of glass, for me, really suits the style of cabinet. I very much like the hardware - again, all to that Arts and Crafts aesthetic. A very small point for greater Arts and Crafts authenticity - use slotted screws. I visited the Gordon Russell museum within the Gordon Russell factory (now gone?) and remember well being shown an exquisite piece made by apprentices - but, horror, the slots on the screws were not all exactly horizontal. Mr Russell was, apparently, not happy. That kind of attention to detail has stuck with me - I don’t always attain it but I strive for it.

@@morganhurst_redridgeI bought Dowelmax for doing long waterfall miters and it is impressive. Don't think Jassem can do that but domino could for much higher price.

That's probably my favorite piece so far that I've seen you do! I must do everything I can now to resist trying to get into stained glass work myself! I've no space! In regards to a domino... you know I have one and wish I had a mortiser. Not in place of, but in addition to. I get jealous whenever I see you use yours! While the domino is great for what it does, it's not "fun" to use, imo. It just is what it is. Also, while the domino machine is new and modern, loose tenon joinery is not. Loose tenon joinery actually dates back to at least roman times.
@morganhurst_redridge
@morganhurst_redridge 8 ай бұрын
I too tried to avoid getting into stained glass, then one day it just kind of happened! That's kind of my idea with getting a domino someday, I can use it to smash out a whole bunch of the joinery quickly and accurately but then on other areas take some time and have fun with the mortiser!

Do you know how to use glazing? Your glass panels really should be glazed to prevent the glass from rattling and shifting in the came. It prevents cracks and chips. Good luck in your learning process.
@morganhurst_redridge
@morganhurst_redridge 8 ай бұрын
I'm still fairly new to this but from what I understand there's two different process that achieve that same result. You can glaze the windows with a thicker putty or cement the windows with a mixture of lime & linseed oil that then hardens under the came. I've been using the cementing process so far and I really like the look of it, the clip at 19:20 is applying the cementing paste.
