Which layout do you prefer? A, B or C? I'm thinking of a medium to dark grey backing/binding? thoughts?

I think it would be interesting to have a single diamond (either centered or off-center), with all of the remaining strips paralleling each of the four sides, to create one huge diamond design. That, of course, for a larger quilt! 😺💕🐾

Black sashing in between with a black border would make it pop and not look so busy. Gives the eye a chance to rest. Beautiful! But, my choice is A - Diamond.

If it is already quilted with batting and backing, why more backing and how are you going to attach that backing AND I agree that you probably do NOT need the top muslin. LOVE the stained glass fabric tho! You can buy 1.5" jelly rolls in solid colors which saves a lot of time cutting. HAPPY QUILTING!!!

Thank you for watching and for your comments. There are so many ways to get the same result. The choice to use muslin was just a personal preference. Putting the backing on each square - again a personal preference -- I want to limit the fluff going into my machine. I'm working on getting this one finished (life has just been very distracting lately) and I will make a quick video showing how I attach a finished backing. I am by no means an expert. I'm learning right along with everyone else. Hope you're having a wonderful day.

I can see how you finish the top by putting the 1 inch strips of black between squares and sewing them but how would I finish the bottom? or do I need to put another backing on?
@CrazyDavesCrew

I'm putting a backing on it. Part II shows how I attached a couple of the blocks to a thin sashing (no batting with the sashing -- black strip is only 1" and with the seams, the string blocks nestle next to each other) -- kzbin.info/www/bejne/rHrUhHx-oa50htk Got distracted with other projects but 2019 is my UFO (unfinished objects) year! Part III where I finish the quilt is coming soon. I will "quilt" it by stitching down and across the sashing seams. Thank you so much for watching.

I usually piece right on top of the batting. Is there a reason for the additional piece of muslin between the batting and the strings?
@CrazyDavesCrew
@CrazyDavesCrew 5 жыл бұрын
Personal preference. I simply prefer sewing my strips to the muslin -- in the past, the batting seemed to leave pieces behind in the machine. But, having discovered the warm and natural batting (which seems smoother and less likely to leave pieces behind in my machine) I may have to try sewing straight onto the batting again.

I like A the best. Each diamond block could be bordered with a 2 1/2 inch black strip sash to give the appearance of windows. For the backing, I would chose a batik blend of colors similar to the colors used in the top or stained-glass side ... I don't think a person that would like all the pretty colors in the "stained-glass" side would like a backing that would be in the dark black/gray end of color, or lack of color. I think a black or gray would be depressing. Unless you want to let the family know your mood for the day when they open the bedroom door ... Stain-glass top side = "happy day" and Black/gray on top = "go away". ;)

Did you sew the black strips down after ironing but before you added a new color strip?

I understand how to attach the block together with the black piece, but I'm confused about putting the backing on it before binding. Do you just sew around the edges to attach the backing? Does the backing just free float on the back with no quilting or attachment other than around the binding edge? Could you put a 1 1/2" black binding over where you've joined the muslin blocks together, fold in 1/4" on each side, stitch that on the back on each side or with a decorative stitch to cover where the muslin blocks go together? That way you could use an attractive piece of fabric in place of the muslin back, see the quilting as you go lines. Would this work? I'm just a little confused by the extra backing that is put on the quilt as you've described. Thanks for the strip quilt lesson.

Some different ways to bind it. Once the back is "quilted" (down and across the adjoining black strips), can either bind with binding or can make sure there is some overhang of the backing and fold it over the top. Part of what I love about quilting -- you can choose the method that works best for you. Thanks so much for watching.

I know this was a few months ago, what I do is, instead of using muslin while quilting as you go is I use the fabric that I plan to use as the backing. I also only use 100% cotton batting so no need to use muslin on top.

Love A - diamonds! How do you finish the back seams? How does the backing get quilted if it's added after the seams are sewed?
@CrazyDavesCrew
@CrazyDavesCrew 5 жыл бұрын
I've taken some time away from my machine and from that project but a finished project is coming up! Going to be very simple -- after squares are attached, will add the backing with a few straight seams up and down, then add binding. Video is on its way.

I like these -- 45mm Rotary Cutter Blades (PACK OF 10): amzn.to/2SdyPlI Very important (I learned the hard way) -- change the blade out as soon as you notice it giving you a bit of trouble. Also, check the screw that holds the blade -- not too tight, definitely snug, and it will loosen with use.

Hey, I got a question please, if you don't mind but that blue cutting mat. where did you get it? and what can you trace that Dresden plates right off there. So it has things you can trace and cut for your sewing?
@CrazyDavesCrew
@CrazyDavesCrew 6 жыл бұрын
Here is a link to it on Amazon -- amzn.to/2NsZZmd I've never used the shapes on the mat yet, but it's nice to know they are there for when I DO want them. I'm assuming you'd use a think piece of paper, trace the shape and then transfer it to the fabric. Let me know how it works.

I loved the "A" layout. In fact, it has encouraged me to try this. I just completed a jacket by using a very similar technique. I am new to all of this, so your video fascinated me! Which layout did you end up doing after all?

Thank you so much! I'm going with the diamond. It's taking me a little longer to finish than I'd anticipated but once they are all attached together, will make sure y'all get to see how it gets finished. Don't forget to come back! and be careful, this string block pattern can be quite addictive!

Love the A layout! But how do you piece together the quilted squares? Won’t the seams be too bulky?

kzbin.info/www/bejne/rHrUhHx-oa50htk --- I join blocks with a thin sashing -- the quilted blocks will just butt together with no bulk. I realize this is an older video, but I'm wondering...you said that as you go along on these string squares it's already quilted, and I see that is the case, however, what about when you put a backing on...won't that also need to be quilted?
