My own tip is go for a face shield or some type of other shield instead of just goggles you use in a lab. I had a small glass shard embed in my eyelid when I was using the proper safety glasses and cause a small skin irritation but it could have been so much worse.

Ooh I have another one. I was using latex gloves with a handheld dremmel and diamond piece. The dremmel caught my glove and ate it, pulling my hand into the dremmel. Luckily it isn't super powerful and I could pull my hand away and break the glove but I did get small bruises from it. Perhaps thicker gloves that won't get pulled into your tools is a better option than latex just for the glass cutting and grinding stage.

I actually bought the safety glasses that almost seal to your skin, the ones healthcare workers wear. I used regular safety ones and my eyes got so irritated by the soldering fumes (despite proper ventilation) because I hunch too much over my work. Had an eye infection for a week after, so lesson learned.

I haven't yet started since I'm still getting supplies, Glass etc, but I realized no one has ever mentioned the top of Head, Glass in Hair or possibly Ear, collar down Back or Chest, etc. There's so many possibilities of weak defense points in this. I have used a Dremel sanding before and afterwards rubbing neck, it feels like grit along with the smell of metal. After you should Shower or you will likely miss something if grinding, soldering might also depending. We need each time to consider that time individually what we should do to be safe.

man... i left some bottled kombucha at room tempp too long and it burst open with so much force there were tiny shards of glass in every single wall and the ceiling. thank god no one was in the room, or god forbid one of my pets

I would add to your recommendations the need to wear clothing with natural fiber. If solder drops on your legs it will burn right through to your skin and also melt the synthetic clothing and the melted material and solder will stick to your legs and the burn really hurts then. I’ve dropped solder on denim and while it got my attention, it didn’t burn through the clothing and burn and skin.

Great Video, it's always good to be reminded about safety. We teach classes in our studio so it's good practice to keep safety glass on because other people might get glass flying. Also, we keep a bottle of lavender essential oil in the shop. It's the best thing for a burn. If a student accidently touches an iron, lavender oil provides immediate relief from the pain of a burn and it has antiseptic properties so it's good for the injury. 🙂🙂🙂

wow i have never heard of that! i will have to test it against honey. i'm a cook and have avoided burns that would otherwise blister from putting on honey really quickly and leaving on for five to ten minutes. i have no idea how it's so amazing but it's like atching a miracle happen. the skin may still be sensetive or even a little red, but that's a million times better than a painful blistered pussing burn!

I wear a full face shield so that no solder balls fly into my eyes or face and gloves to protect my hands and long sleeves. I use a heppa air filter in the window to suck out the flux fumes. I wear the full face shield when grinding.

There are Non-Lead based solders that I highly recommend looking into. Lead is great for electronics (look up NASA's youtube tutorial on soldering) and works very well but I think tin/silver or nickel solder is what I'll be buying next, currently transitioning away from it. I'll keep some lead solder around as needed but honestly I think it's just best for human health to move away from that. Still figuring out exactly what is the strongest alternative.

Hey there! i'm a beginner with stained glass and working with lead makes me a bit nervous. I've been hearing about lead-free solder but seeing a lot of mixed reviews. have you found any that work for you?!

One thing i noticed was people buying stained glass jewelry. Super unsafe as far as lead poisoning goes. A lot of people fiddle with jewelry while wearing it. Very easy to absentmindedly play with it, then eat, touch your face etc

I'm glad you did this video I got one of my eyes nearly put out by a boy He thew a rock and hit my left eye and too this day I am very safe when it comes to my eyes. They are the only eyes you will get so everyone be safe.

You didn't mention shoes and tracking glass bits. Also, isn't glass dust supposed to be very bad to breath? (grinding or sanding)

how do you clean your work space? do you just use a shop vac? Do you use a special filter or bag to contain the glass slivers/dust/shards? Also work surface. Is it just plywood? I'm trying to think about a cheap board I can put on top of the workbench in a shared space that i can remove after i'm done a work session. I don't want to give anyone lead poisoning or glass slivers. Awesome channel!

I've scared myself when the grinder seemed to kick back the glass, sending it flying out of my hand :p Also, I've started incorporating wire into my work and man, does the wire get hot! Really need gloves for that!

I am really interested in stained glass. Can I do this in my current workspace or will it leave bits of glass everywhere and be problematic for other activities in the same space?

Just my 2 cents , but I'd never try and share stained glass space with quilting space. The tiniest tiniest little shards of glass can be found even after I thought I had cleaned up well! I moved my quilting stuff to a different area. I'm seriously considering a she shed :)

Glass dust is a thing. Personally, I wouldn't break or grind glass in the house (cement garage is fine). Just like dropping and breaking a glass in your kitchen, you will be surprised when weeks later (after you've cleaned many times) you catch a glint, and oh, there's another piece of glass that was hiding.

I use a brush and sweep as best as I can without kicking up dust. You can use a grid for cutting or cut on a wood/plastic sheet to remove and clean.

Is finished stained glass safe to touch because of the solder or should you not touch it/ wash your hands after touching the finished piece?

You can safely touch it and handle it. Just wash your hands after so you dont transfer lead and ingest.

at 8min 22 you use a grinder whitout any pusher ;commercial pousher existe but; aesy to do whit a 2liter coke botle and a lobster rubber blue one are ok and push safty jakc 47 71

Have you ever accidentally dipped your soldering iron into the flux? I’m afraid if what would happen. I just started doing stained glass this week and I’ve come close a bunch of times already! I get mixed up switching between the flux brush and the iron.

Ha actually you can dip it in the flux and that will clean out the soldering iron tip from some corrosion! But best to be safe and take it slow!✌️

Your safety glasses don’t have protection on the side of your eyes. You need better protective glasses
