Sometimes using copper or aluminum backing provides enough protection from oxidation on the penetration side. Other times a high purity argon purge is needed.
I used aluminum backing for most of this project but for welding the end caps, it made sense to use an argon purge.
I used the CK worldwide mt200 ac/dc tig welder using both straight DC current and pulse tig settings. The pulse tig worked extremely well on the threaded nipple fillet welds.
When purging with argon, it helps to think of argon as water.
There can be areas that trap oxygen if not vented strategically.
