visit my online store here weldmongerstor... This is part 2 of STainless steel welding tips where we talk about some pulse tig settings and also purging stainless steel with argon gas. Sometimes using copper or aluminum backing provides enough protection from oxidation on the penetration side. Other times a high purity argon purge is needed.
I used aluminum backing for most of this project but for welding the end caps, it made sense to use an argon purge.
I used the CK worldwide mt200 ac/dc tig welder using both straight DC current and pulse tig settings. The pulse tig worked extremely well on the threaded nipple fillet welds.
When purging with argon, it helps to think of argon as water.
There can be areas that trap oxygen if not vented strategically.

With the knowledge that I drink with your videos I was able to build a 4" pipeline with 52 meters of 316 stainless steel. Back purging and the gas lens made the difference. The pipeline is clean and it's pumped with 5 bar of water. I really thank you for a young welder like me getting teached by the best. You're my mentor! Best regards from Portugal 🙆

I'm just a beginner here, but I use the TIG finger to smoothen my travel speed while I'm running beads on straight passes like lap welds and t-joints, it's been such a good help and I can't wait to get into more things with this amazing tool =) thanks a tone Jody!

For those who don't know that aluminum backing doesn't eliminate the need to purge it can reduce the use of purge gas in certain situations especially on extremely thin stainless the metal doesn't get hot enough out to Sugar out something we used extensively back in the day whenever I was building food processing equipment good show Jody

i was amazed at how much that travel speed picked up with pulse ON !!!! I use chill blocks and back purge when ever i can but thin stainless .040 and below i still have to pulse the pedal quickly on my transformer machine with no pulse features on it, it gets the job done with nearly zero deceleration but is hard on the foot,pumping it that quickly haha. Time for a inverter/pulser machine soon.. Thanks for another awesome video :)

I find that I'll turn on pulse for one weld, and my machine stays on pulse the rest of the week...welding stainless. I'll tack parts together, doing everything with pulse. It feels really natural to me; I kind of forget that it is pulsing, @ ~1 pulse/min. Those outside corners turn out awesome using pulse...with or without filler. I would have welded the whole thing with pulse! :)

@buckhorncortez
@buckhorncortez 7 жыл бұрын
Any joint that's not welded will not be air tight. All you'd be doing is constantly pulling air through the joints that aren't welded. Purging is the easiest way to get the backside oxygen-free. Finally, any type of construction (like the one shown) that is a box would risk collapsing because you're causing a vacuum on the interior, and atmospheric pressure is (roughly) 14.6 PSI, or 101,325 Pa.

This is probably a dumb question. If you clamp everything down to avoid distortion, does that mean that there are stresses that remain in the weldment when your done?
@weldingtipsandtricks
@weldingtipsandtricks 7 жыл бұрын
there are always stresses in a weldment. probably more when things are clamped to prevent distortion. for critical applications, a stress relief heat treatment is sometimes used where the pat is heated to a temperature that allows some plastic movement and relief of residual stresses.

mainly because the brackets were much thinner than the body of the manifold so the amperage used to weld brackets would not come close to penetrating thru the .125" thick manifold a little discoloration inside will not be a problem.
