www.homebuildin... Click on this link for more information and helpful videos about stair building, architectural design and home remodeling. You might need to check with your local engineer before doing this one, but here are a few ways that you can use pre-manufactured or precut stair stringers usually sold at your local home improvement centers or lumber yards to make them a little longer for longer stairways.

Excellent recommendation!!! 👍 This idea helped out immensely! My friend and I were stuck because the pre-manufactured stringers didn’t fit out plan. Your idea 💡 worked perfectly! Thanks again!!!

Well done video. Total rise and run are always measured to calculate unit rise and run, so just making my own stairs makes $ sense. One place where I might buy instead of making them is with pressure treated deck stairs, so I'm not cutting into the treatment and exposing the untreated inner core. In your example underframe support for the stringers would be as you highlighted, definitely advisable. Indoors... PL 400, glued and screwed

When I cut pressure treated 2x12's for stringers, I coat the exposed cuts with Copper Green (brown) Wood Preservative.

This is fantastic. But will any of these methods pass building code inspections? I just built a modular home and I'm required to install my own basement stairs. Thx again.

Thanks, great ideas. I've been trying to figure out how I'll replace my stringers since they are about 14' long!

I have two 10 ft stringes the third one its 5 ft. I was just thinking about this, any advice? since the middle stinger will have to be connected with another stringer to make it 10 ft and this is for my deck.

I would probably need a little more detailed information to answer question or you can email me some pictures and you can get our email address at our website. I don't understand exactly what you're trying to do.

I assume a year later you came to a conclusion, did it work? I am considering doing something similar but with 3x5 step stringers to get 15 steps and using 2 additional 5 step stringers to connect them

When joining stringers, how do you compensate for that bottom step (1.5" shorter rise)?

@@stairbuilding If the risers are typically 7", the bottom step is usually 5 1/2" becoming 7" when you add the tread. So, when the top 7" riser of the first stringer meets with the 5 1/2" bottom riser of the 2nd stringer, how are uniform heights maintained?
@h_nabilis

The bottom step in the stringer has a rise that is typically 1.5 inches shorter than the others as @jimonqa indicates. So a modification must be made to at least the first method. I think the solution would be to get two stringers with an extra stair and saw off the bottom part on the same line as the step with the short riser. This has the extra benefit of removing that empty triangle as the two risers will meet flush after that cut.

Two ways to do this- Cut the first tread 3/4 inch lower Or if your working from a finish height and so the last tread will also end up being a problem (making the first step larger than u want, and the last step SHORTER than you want…) Cut 3/4 off the very bottom of the stringer against the ground, allowing the entire stringer to drop 3/4 inch downward shortening the first step and lengthening the last step but not changing in between obviously
@jimonqa

@@willthomsen7569 This is about pre-cut stringers you purchase, so the Video isn't valid as it doesn't address the need to modify the pre-cut stringers to address the shorter 5.5" step. None of his examples work until that point is addressed. @Nabil has it right... remove the bottom step, then adjust the height of the new bottom step to match the others.

What if you need to go longer than the length of a 2x12. I need stairs 22' long

I've used 6 x 14 for stairs like that before and brackets. Here's a link to a book for more info. www.homebuildingandrepairs.com/books/brackets.html

Not sure I would bolt those stringers together like that with only two steps grabbing on such a long run… def need mid carriage support for that still a sketchy way to do that. If you wanna build 16 foot staircase learn how to cut stringers
